NEW YORK — A racy, historical novel based on the Prophet Muhammad's child bride A'isha was supposed to hit book stores in the U.S. Tuesday. But in a rare case of self-censorship to preempt possible violent reaction by Muslims, one of the world's largest publishing houses pulled the plug on the book just before its release date. Sherry Jones, author of The Jewel of Medina, said she received word from Random House Inc. that the book's release would be "postponed indefinitely." REST OF THE STORY HERE

Sherry Jones intended her book to be flattering to Islam. Of course, a woman writing a book which talks about Muhammad being a gentle lover might upset certain people of a violent persuasion. She seems a tad ignorant of Islam. To be fair to her critics, I think her book must be misrepresenting Muhammad quite a bit. She thought her book about Muhammad's life would give readers "an understanding of Islam as a peaceful religion." Meanwhile, The DaVinci Code, greatly misrepresenting history in order to gratuitously offend Christianity, is celebrated everywhere even with a display at my local Walmart and a major motion picture. Well, when thinking about what movies to watch, I will be sure to hold a grudge against Ron Howard and Tom Hanks, but they certainly don't fear for their lives.

Or maybe they're just trying to protect Muhammed's rep. Treatment of Women quote:
Muhammad himself actually had thirteen wives, two concubines/slaves, and four women of uncertain relationships. Of note, a Sura conveniently appeared to give Muhammad an exception to the 4-wife rule (Sura 33:50). One of his wives was but nine years old when he consumated his marriage with her. (See Aisha.) ORIGINAL: Jhud Little suprise there after the fatwa against Rushdie. Don't forget the more recent Danish experience either. It actually raises an interesting ethical dilemma. If you were a publisher, and knew that people could die as a result of publishing a book, and if that book were just a romance novel (as opposed to a major political/religious/philosophical book), would you still publish it? I probably would since I believe strongly in the freedom of speech, but I think it might be a tough decision.

If people are willing to kill over it, I would say by nature it is more than just a 'romance novel'.

Christian-bashing has become an art form in our culture, so nobody has to fear publishing something like that. In regards to this book, I thought the publisher's reaction was disgusting. There are many books/movies/songs that offend me, but you don't see me out there trying to kill the artists who made them. Random said they were simply releasing her from her contract so that another publisher could pick it up, but you know that no major publisher will be brave enough to do so. If I were this author, I would try and self-publish it. With all the hype she's getting, she could probably still sell a lot of copies. As for the hypothetical question of whether to publish or not, I would absolutely publish it. I feel sorry for the people who might get hurt, but it's the principle of the thing. Whenever Muslims get offended they scream about it and threaten to kill people. Are we supposed to kow tow to them and censor everything that they don't like? That's not the kind of world I want to live in.

Christian-bashing has become an art form in our culture, so nobody has to fear publishing something like that. Tell me about it... And I've already posted thread concerning the politicizing of good taste, or what constitutes art! IMHO, I'm a bit suspicious at times that there's a certain segment within the already-politically correct arts & letters establishment/snob community, that thinks if it's blasphemous (towards Christians, if not traditional Judaism at times), then it's (assumed) already to be a masterpiece, this side of Citizen Kane, Beethoven's 2nd, and dare I say, War & Peace! But when it comes to Islam (let alone Buddhism, etc...), it's ironically taboo! *unless your name is Carlos Mencia!

ORIGINAL: huskarine sadly i believe them trying to push secular humanism, but i think they are just afraid of muslims... just plain sad...not even debatable... Actually, secular humanists had to put up with this stuff back in the 1600s as well. Erasmus, the father of modern humanism (and also a devout Christian and hilarious writer), nearly got himself burnt at the stake by BOTH the Catholics AND the Lutherans. Galileo was forced to recant his idea that the earth revolved around the sun when he was threatened with death, and he still managed to get himself excommunicated. The early humanists mostly capitulated. And all the way up until the 1700s, the vast majority of them were Christians. Any conflict with the basic concept of humanism ("Live and let live") has more to do with the "secular" part than the "humanism" part. Unlike Christianity, though, I don't think Islam can survive humanism. I'd give it about two or three generations. I am not sure how many mothers would want to raise their children to believe literally everything the Koran says about a woman's place in life.
