Nate is turning 13 this month, and I wanted to get him a book. (yeah, just one, because there are a couple other things I am getting him). Anyway, he's 13 but his reading level is a few years ahead. He has read Frank Peretti's Veritas Project series and really enjoyed it. He likes mysteries. He also enjoyed the Nathan T. Riggins series, although that might have been a bit on the easy-reading side, the hero was named Nathan, lol, so of course he lvoed it. If I leave him alone, he will re-read all the Red Rock mysteries, all the Frank Peretti kids' and teens' books, etc, but he rarely branches out. Any ideas?

Are you looking for Christian fiction, or any fiction? For Christian fiction I would suggest Ted Dekker's 'Blink', or some of Randy Singer's books such as 'The Cross Examination of Oliver Finney'. His new one, 'By Reason of Insanity' also looks great, but I haven't read it yet. I suggested these ones because you said he was at a mature reading level. Some of these might get a little "boring" for your average 13 yo, but they are really good! For non Christian (but clean) fiction, I would have to say Brian Jacques. Although if he isn't into fantasy, or if you aren't comfortable with magic type stuff, this author probably isn't for you.

I'm an avid reader (and a little older than 13) but seldom do people give me a book that interests me or, in some cases, that I haven't read before. Now my family gives me gift certificates to various book stores. It's almost like a double gift because I've found picking out the right book or books is as much enjoyment to me as reading them. Just a thought.

Generally when I pick books, he likes them. Once a few years ago I picked one and he wasn't interested, so I said, 'Well, you have to read the first chapter, but after that you can put it away and never read it if you like' and of course he had to finish the whole book and then came and said, 'That was a trick!' Now my eldest will not read a book I choose, but this child is different.

I know I already gave some suggestions, but I came across another amazing book series the other week. It's called The Sword of Lyric series, by Sharon Hink. The first one is about a lady who gets pulled into another world where she must help to save this place from attack by an evil country. It's about a mother, but both I and my 14 yo brother read it, and we agreed that her being a mother didn't make her hard to relate to. The second and third books are about her teenage son, so it gets even more interesting for us young'uns! Anyways, the books are fantasy (obviously), and they're full of adventure, sword fights, and truths about God. I highly recommend them to anyone!

I just bought one of the Diary of a Wimpy Kid books, and my 12-year old read it in one day. What I read of it was pretty funny.
