I've been looking for a passage since I became a Christian in '88. During one of my first Bible studies I came across a passage about King David flying 18 cubits off the ground to Ethiopia. I showed it to the instructor and asked them what it meant and she just looked like a deer caught in the headlights. She couldn't tell me how he flew. She was going to ask a pastor but when I asked her about it she became rather aloof with me. I just want to know what someone who's knowledgeable in God's Word has to say about it. I'm not trying to start anything.

I have never run across that verse in scripture, nor has my Bible study software been able to locate it is searches of multiple translations.

It might possibly be somewhere in Hebraic writings or mythology.

Here is every verse with eighteen cubits in it, the searches revealed no verses that contained both David and Ethiopia.

(1 Kings 7:15) For he cast two pillars of brass, of eighteen cubits high apiece: and a line of twelve cubits did compass either of them about.

(2 Kings 25:17) The height of the one pillar was eighteen cubits, and the chapiter upon it was brass: and the height of the chapiter three cubits; and the wreathen work, and pomegranates upon the chapiter round about, all of brass: and like unto these had the second pillar with wreathen work.

(Jeremiah 52:21) And concerning the pillars, the height of one pillar was eighteen cubits; and a fillet of twelve cubits did compass it; and the thickness thereof was four fingers: it was hollow.

Wow. Now I'm really baffled. If I hadn't shown the passage to someone I'd think I misread it or something but I know it was a Bible I was reading. I remember the perplexed look on the instructors face after she read it. What the heck. Well thank you for trying. I really appreciate it. I guess the hunt continues.

I even expanded the search to include the Apocrypha on the chance that the Bible you had was one that included those books, just not there. I don't have search software to use on my copies of Hebraic Literature and Mythologies...but will see what I can find as I get the opportunity.

From another thread, the King James was what they were using.

Maybe it was just a specific translation that worded it this way but I'm almost positive I was reading the King James version from the start b'c I remember starting a new church when I moved and felt uncomfortable with the NIV.

There is only one mention of Ethiopia in all of Samuel, Kings and Chronicles, And that is 2 Kings 19.9, long after David was gone.

Looks like a chimney scripture ---- not there.

Maybe the puzzlement wasn't a scripture, but
a interpretation of what wasn't there?

I am slowly (it isn't set up for search) my e-copies of Hebraic Literature (translations from the Talmud Midrashim and Kabbala) and Tales and Maxims from the Midrash on the off chance that it might be somewhere in there.

I just got these...if you are familiar with them you might be able to help me narrow the search by letting me know if such a story wouldn't be there.

But to tell the truth it sounds more like something out of 1001 Arabian Nights.

I did run across this in my morning reading today. Could the part about the flying scroll have been remembered, then combined with either the second vision or something other partial memory?

Then I turned, and lifted up mine eyes, and looked, and behold a flying roll. And he said unto me, What seest thou? And I answered, I see a flying roll; the length thereof is twenty cubits, and the breadth thereof ten cubits. Then said he unto me, This is the curse that goeth forth over the face of the whole earth: for every one that stealeth shall be cut off as on this side according to it; and every one that sweareth shall be cut off as on that side according to it. I will bring it forth, saith the LORD of hosts, and it shall enter into the house of the thief, and into the house of him that sweareth falsely by my name: and it shall remain in the midst of his house, and shall consume it with the timber thereof and the stones thereof. Then the angel that talked with me went forth, and said unto me, Lift up now thine eyes, and see what is this that goeth forth. And I said, What is it? And he said, This is an ephah that goeth forth. He said moreover, This is their resemblance through all the earth. And, behold, there was lifted up a talent of lead: and this is a woman that sitteth in the midst of the ephah. And he said, This is wickedness. And he cast it into the midst of the ephah; and he cast the weight of lead upon the mouth thereof. Then lifted I up mine eyes, and looked, and, behold, there came out two women, and the wind was in their wings; for they had wings like the wings of a stork: and they lifted up the ephah between the earth and the heaven. Then said I to the angel that talked with me, Whither do these bear the ephah? And he said unto me, To build it a house in the land of Shinar: and it shall be established, and set there upon her own base. (Zechariah 5:1-11 KJVR)
