If you look at the back of most food products, you will see information that the average caloric intake is 2000 calories per day. As a skinny person, wanting to gain wait, even getting up to 2000 a day seems like a lot.

I mean, how do people do it? Junk food? I would like to have 5 meals a day which eventually total 3000 a day, but, I do not have a lot of money.

Any ideas?

Eat the healthier foods that a lot of people avoid- whole fat milk & cheeses, avocado, nuts/seeds, healthy oils.

It is actually pretty easy to eat a lot of calories- and yes, a lot of people do it by eating junk-- foods high in fat & sugar. Not recommended, though.

Concerto, I was very skinny until after age 35. I tried many things to gain weight. Once your metabolism begins to slow, you'll gain weight.

I also don't recommend padding the caloric intake.

What's your height and weight? What's your activity level? I'd be surprised if 2000 cal/day would make you gain; that's a small person's caloric intake to maintain their weight.

Go HERE, then after you get your BMR, go HERE to estimate your daily caloric needs.

As for what to eat, I agree with rainbowtvp - go for the healthy fats. You can also eat carbs - brown rice, other grains, potatoes - and most of these are cheap.

Have you checked with your doctor that there are no underlying medical reasons why you are (presumeably) underweight (given you want to gain)? You may want to get advice from a dietitian about how to gain weight healthily ~ and you need to include exercise in your plans, if you don't do any.

peanuts are the cheapest food compared to their nutrients, at least here they are.

spaghetti/rice/potatoes are good too.

milk with full fat too.

usually its carbs that make you feel full. at least thats the case with me. i can eat 2000 calories of meat and not feel full, yet with just 300 calories of carbs i may feel full

For some people, eating junk food and empty calories could just send your metabolism into overdrive and mess it up even more. That's what sugar does to my dh. He's always had a hard time gaining (good) weight. He works out very very hard but likes to eat very very bad. A couple of years ago he started eating "salad" - which, for him was spinach, cheese, croutons, and bacon...and he started gaining. You can afford a lot more healthy fats than someone trying to lose, as mentioned above. But junk food will definitely just exacerbate the problem (and probably create more).

I just threw this together on fitday.com to give you an idea what 2000 calories (still eating clean) would look like:

Breakfast: 2 eggs scrambled with 1 oz shredded cheddar cheese and 1 c skim milk

Morning Snack: 1 cup cottage cheese with 1 c diced pineapple

Lunch: sandwich with whole wheat bread, 3 oz turkey deli meat, 1 oz slice of cheese

Afternoon snack: medium banana and 2 oz almonds

Dinner: 4 oz chicken breast, 3/4 c brown rice, 1/2 c broccoli

Evening Snack: medium apple and 1 T peanut butter

Hope that helps. You can play around with things on fitday or another site like that to come up with a plan you like. Gaining or losing, it's still really important to eat real food!

Well, I find it hard to figure it all out with the food, etc.
