I posted quite a while back about my ds. We were having some issues. After seeking advice of our pastor, and teachers we had him tested for several different things. Last week we were told that he has ADHD, and that he probably got it from me. We will also be working with the doctor to deal with some anxiety issues, but that will be in the near future. He is 6 and going into first grade. He can't read yet, and struggles with reading. This is a whole new area for my dh and I, and I would love to hear from parents who have faced this. Any wisdom would be appreciated.
Thank you,

My son was diagnosed when he was in Kindergarten. He's 10 now and has been on meds ever since diagnosis. The meds helped a great deal. For the past 2 summers, though, he has not had any medication at all.

I would recommend talking to the doctor about medication. Make sure they understand that you still want your son to be a child - a boy - who will sometimes do things:) You don't want them to be a zombie, though.

Continue to do parenting stuff - encourage reading to help him learn to read, discipline, encourage good behavior - act as if your son does not have this 'issue'.

I hope this helps. Feel free to PM me if you want to talk offline about it.

I wouldn't recommend medication unless you are completely at your wits end. Meds have side effects and are not a healthy choice for your child's body. I would recommend taking him to a homeopathic doctor and focusing on his diet. So many things can affect ADHD; dyes, sugars, white flour (the way the body processes it), preservatives, chemicals, pesticides, etc. You have other options besides medication.

Thank you hlyfvrd1. We have an appt. this week with his regular doc. After that we then need to meet with his school. The schools in my town are extremely academic based. My dd is going in to 4th grade and has always been in advanced, so the school is great for her, but with our ds the school may not be the best for him.
deedeeowens thank you for your reply. I am curious do you have a child with ADHD?

deedeeowens, seeing a homeopathic "doctor" could be very detrimental to a child who truly suffers from the disorder. One should have more caution going into these types of "doctors" than going into a real doctor who wants to treat with the proper medication fora child with ADHD.

My recommendation to you is to get him re-tested by another doctor, and if you get the same response, look into getting medication. My husband went *30* years having undiagnosed ADD-inattentive type, and his schoolwork suffered even though he is brilliant, and it took him 8 years to finish a 4-year degree because he could not pay enough attention to the task at hand. His life was in shambles when I met him and together we worked on finding him help. FINALLY, at age 30, a therapist prescribed him Adderall, and it has made a COMPLETE difference is his life. He's now getting a promotion, he can organize his desk and prioritize his to-do list. He speaks in a more structured tone instead of rambling, and best off all, he has better confidence and his self-esteem has gone through the roof. He feels SO MUCH BETTER now that he's getting the care he needs!

Good luck to you and please don't be afraid of the meds! They are there to help more than hinder, and be wary of these folk who say things can be cured by these "homeopathic doctors". Good luck to you and I will be praying for your family!

Hello becomingwhole,

We have a 14 year old son with ADHD. He was first diagnosed by a developmental pediatrician at age 8 (we took him due to concerns from teachers about his school performance/behavior). We already KNEW he had issues (his twin sister is autistic and he has some of those leanings as well), but prior to this time did not want him put on medicine, etc. We relented though and he was on meds (metadate) for about 1 1/2 years. At first, it was a MIRACLE to see the difference. He was finally able to focus. At home, with no prodding, he wrote a 5-6 page story about teasing girls (this was not a school project either). He was excited about the change in him too. Eventually though, we started seeing some real depression issues (and he was on the lowest dose possible...........and it was time released), so we took him off meds. I homeschooled him for 6th-part of 7th grade until we moved. Homeschooling became difficult because he would not focus on his work. We decided to put him back in public school thinking boredom/lack of new friends was an issue. He struggled.............alot! Every semester was him not doing his work, then frantically trying to pull his grades up at the end of the semester.

Well, after doing the diet thing.........avoiding foods with dyes, going more with all natural foods (and we still are doing this as it is more healthy), we still did not see a change. Since our son is going into high school this year and EVERY year's grades count for good colleges, we decided to try the medicine route again. The last semester of 8th grade he was on meds (low dose of adderall)----his final grades for the last semester------5 A's and 1 B (he could have had straight A's had he studied for his final exam in Science!). We are in a very tough school district too, so his grades really do mean something. I am far from a medicine pusher, but when someone can't function properly and has tried other avenues with no success, medicine can really be a God send. My son, who was not only struggling with his grades, but also with his self-esteem, is now MUCH happier seeing that he is NOT incapable, but actually is very bright and able to succeed. He is talking about Dentistry school in college...........and we are all for that!

My recommendation is always see a child psychologist rather than a pediatrician in these cases, because the peds are more likely to just call the symptoms ADHD and toss some meds at them. I am not knocking emds- they are sometimes necessary... but they should be tried only when other methods fail. A child psychologist typically will do a more thorough evaluation to make sure there isn't some other issue before dx with ADHD.

If you try meds, you should see a drastic improvement right away. If not, they probably aren't worth the risks. They just don't work for some kids.

Thank you all,
LivePrayDream thankyou for sharing your experience ! He was first tested at school, and then we went to have test done again by a child psychologist. He is a bright child, and a lot of fun, and wants to read and do well in school. We have an appt. with his regular doc. tomorrow, and we will see what she advises since the child psychologist sent us to her for the meds. We also will continue seeing the child psychologist for some of his anexity issues, but that is a different story.
Our next stop will be at the school, with all of his test and then a plan from there.
Thank you all,
Becomingwhole

My husband was also not diagnosed till adulthood...he is ADHD and also has a mood disorder, likely Cyclothymia, which is a milder version of Bipolar (he is also diabetic and has pituitary gland problems, so we joke that his whole body chemistry is out of wack). He is also very intelligent but struggled with school, with organization, with goal setting, etc. Treatment has made a considerable difference in his life.

I understand the reluctance for putting children on any long-term medication that might not be absolutely necessary...but OTOH, when early, effective treatment is provided for kids who really do need it, it can make a big difference. These kids often have more challenges as time goes on.
