A few weeks back, a couple of my credit union members came by. The man was in his upper 80s and had Alzheimers and it was fairly advanced. We were talking--I don't remember about what. However, he quoted the Bible verse "What should it profit a man if he gained the whole world and lost his soul." I almost cried thinking about so much of his memory being gone but he remembered the Word. His wife put him in a VA nursing home a few weeks later and within a very short time, he went to be with the Lord.
Another one of my members, had to put his dad who is also suffering from Alzheimers in the same VA hospital. His memory is very bad. The gentleman had been a pastor. When first admitted, he thought he was in the service again. However, now he is too busy to visit with his family when they come to see him--he is ministering to the other people there.
I think of God's grace that carries us through the difficult times. I think of lives devoted to His service, who when they have forgotten so many things and people, remember God and the Word.
What kind of foundation are we laying for ourselves so that the Lord will be Who we remember when all else is gone?

I enjoyed hearing your stories. I, too, had a dear friend who 'lost' her mind to Alzheimer's. Her recognition would come and go. But if I started talking to her about Jesus, her eyes would brighten up and a smile would come on her face. And if I started singing, especially the song 'Majesty', her arms would be raised in praise and the words would come out of her mouth.

Yes, what a wonderful, comforting thing to know that those things He has hidden in our hearts are there for keeps.

I've witnessed nearly the exact same thing in patients I've come across at rest homes.
You think they are in their own world, until you mention Jesus, or you sing an older hymn with them. They do light right up and their faces glow with joy.

Allow me to share this true story. One of my first jobs was working in the cafeteria of a sanitarium (mental ward). Many were Alzheimer patients. There was one woman then who never failed to carry a hymnal with her. She would ask, "What hymn would you like to sing?" You could choose any hymn and she would begin to sing it. That's all she did. She would walk around as long as they'd let her, up and down the hallways...singing praises to Jesus. She was unresponsive to anything else you asked of her.

This is proof the Spirit has not left them alone...even if there mind has.

These are some reassuring stories in this thread. I'd like to know if I lost my mind that I would still be focused on God and it is encouraging to hear of others that are still.
