Adding chapters to a DVD - 9/1/2008 11:29:14 AM

Hi all!

Earlier this year I went on a trip to Israel, and one of the members of our group took videos. He loaned me the VHS tape, and my dad and I recorded it on a DVD. I am planning to make copies of the DVD for the other members of our group. The only problem is, the footage is nearly four hours long. I'd like to divide it into chapters so that people can find the part they would like to watch without having to fast forward through everything. Does anyone know of an easy way to add chapters?

Also, I'd like to be able to make short clips on the computer of certain parts of the video (for example, the baptism part). Is there an easy way to do that?

Thanks in advance for your help!

You need to do this on the machine that made the DVD recording. Usually, it can be set to automatically insert chapter marks on preset regular intervals, such as every 5 minutes, or 10 minutes, etc. Or by manually inserting the chapter after the DVD has been made but BEFORE it was "finalized."

Regarding computer clips from your DVD, it can be easy but only for someone already set up with equipment and software for it and knows how to do it.

Thanks for your help. I was hoping there would be a way I could put chapters in on the computer when I burn the copies. But I do still have the VHS tape, so I could go back and try to record another DVD with chapters. If I wanted to insert my own chapters rather than using preset intervals, would I need to sit at the machine and put them in while it was recording, or can that be done after it's recorded but before it's finalized? Or does that depend on the kind of recorder you have?

Thanks again for your help, and sorry for all the additional questions.

You probably can, but it depends on the model of recorder. I think most do but don't know if they all do. The owner's manual will have that information and instructions on how to do it.

I re-recorded the video and had it auto-add chapters every ten minutes, which seemed to work pretty well. I figured out how to add chapters manually while it was recording, but I must have missed a step somewhere because the manual chapters didn't come through on the finalized DVD. But that's okay, it's good enough how it is. Thanks for your help!

Surprisingly enough, I also managed to figure out video clips while playing around with a program on my computer. Yay!

Now if I could just get the DVD burner on my computer to work, so I can copy the DVD. Funny how the easiest part of the process is the part I can't quite figure out.

Glad to hear you got what you need.

One suggestion about copying the DVD, if there's a chance you'll be needing more than one copy of the DVD anytime soon, consider copying the DVD as an iso (or equivalent) image file to your hard drive. That way you when you need another copy, you can just burn that existing image to a blank DVD, you will not have to wait for the computer to read and store the original DVD again. Also--even if you're only making a single copy--if the burn fails for some reason, you can try again with another blank DVD quickly without waiting for the read and store again if you use an image file. The down side is an image file will take up space on your hard drive at about the same size as the files on your DVD.
