This sounds really nuts I know, but is there any kind of mental disorder that causes a person to be highly irritated just by the sound of a person's voice?

Probably not a mental disorder, more of a flesh disorder.

Well, I sure don't want to feel this way, I keep praying about it but so far nothing has changed.

Are you angry at this person for some reason?

How old are you and have you started the "change" yet? I'm 44 and notice that certain things bother me more now than some years ago. I think it can be hormonal.

I wouldnt go so far as saying you were going crazy.
Mainly because I have had that happen to me.
Usually when I am under a lot of stress or in a lot of pain.
Different noises or voices can drive me crazy or make me feel jumpy or angry.

Well, there's people that have really annoying voices, which really drives me insane. I supposed if someone wants to do a study on this, and get a grant from the gov't, I'm sure they can make it a legitimate disorder. LOL!

Yes, this woman has gotten me angry several times over the years, she occasionally says things that just push the wrong buttons in me. She doesn't have an unpleasant voice, just the opposite in fact. Just hearing her talk in the next cube (and she does a LOT of talking) just grates on my nerves, and then I feel like a complete fool for feeling this way. I do not CHOOSE to feel this way. And to answer someone else's question, yes I am going through menopause and have wondered if this is simply a menopausal thing, since I've heard that menopausal women can have irrational feelings.

I asked about a mental disorder, because I know there are many mental--and physical--disorders that can cause strange symptoms. As far as I know, it's not a side effect of any of the medications I'm taking either.

Anyway, I'd sure appreciate prayers about this, because it's getting me down.

I don't think it's a mental disorder in the way you're thinking of.

The fact she's made you angry are probably the reasons why you're finding her irritating now. Even though we may forgive someone, it's not always an instant thing ~ just as many meds aren't an instant thing, sometimes they take a little time to kick in. Your feelings towards this woman are being constantly reopened because you can hear her next to you and such. Chances are, if you didn't have to do this, you'd not have a problem with her.

As for the menopause. Well yes, it can cause problems ~ but again, you're not saying you have this problem with anyone else ~ just one lady who is in the next cube to you and who talks a lot ~ you're just getting a bit of an overdose of her.

Any chance you can move to a different cube?

I listen to streaming music through ear buds otherwise I would strangle a woman in cubicle next to mine. Her non-stop whiny voice drives me nuts.

Yes! I miss a lot of juicy gossip and so on but a life is saved thanks to music.

Another idea is to purposely be kind to this person. Make an effort to chat with her about anything.

I promise, it helped in the above situation.

Thanks, agapetos and Walker. What you said makes sense. Actually, I do listen to music a lot, although I can't always do this since sometimes I'm doing something that requires going to the printer a lot and it gets to be a pain constantly taking off the headphones which are connected to the computer.

Moving to another cube is not an option. I have a nice big window in front of me with a pretty view, and I'm not going to allow someone to make me give that up. Not to mention the fact that it would be a pain to have to pack up everything and move, and someone has to come and move my computer and re-hook it up and that's an expense to our cost center.

I'll just keep praying about it and killing her with kindness, and hopefully it will eventually wear off. That's what my good friend who sits on the othe side of her keeps telling me.

What about wearing an Ipod? That way you don't have to worry about unhooking anything when you have to get up. Your music would just go with you.

I don't know anything at all about IPOD's. Are they expensive? Are they complicated to use? Might be a good idea.

These feelings I'm struggling with are so irrational. Like I'm starting to feel angry with her just for talking! I feel like screaming "SHUT UP!" and it's ridiculous since she doesn't talk loudly or anything. Just something about the tone of her voice and she way she EE-NUN-CIATES all her words, especially the letter "S", as in yessssss, or courssssssss, Merry Chrisssstmasssss, etc. It just gets to me!

I thought I was the only one in the world who doesn't own an iPod.

I feel for you Lady. I've had people like that in my life. Is there a way that you can take a vacation? Maybe a little time away from work might help?

You don't have to get an actual Ipod. You can get by with a fairly inexpensive MP3 player. When I was looking to buy one, I found some decent ones for about $50. You might want to check with stores that are closing like Circuit City. You might get a really good bargain there. Also, check at Target during the holidays. They've announced that they'll be slashing prices soon. I don't know if it's across the board or not.

No matter which way you go, both Ipods and MP3 players are pretty easy to use. In most cases, you just have to plug it in to your computer and transfer the files to it. The only thing you may run into with an MP3 player is that the files have to be MP3s. If your music files aren't, there's plenty of good (free) software around that will convert them for you. Windows Media has that function, but I haven't been able to see how well it works.

One more thing, if you have a cell phone, check to see if it has an MP3 player in it. Mine does. That's why I never had to buy the separate player. I just use my phone. It's really quite lovely.

About your coworker, stop beating yourself up over her. Just do what you need to do to not hear her and call it a day. We all have things that push our buttons, so you're certainly not alone in this. I have a coworker whose voice is pretty annoying, too, but she's the sweetest person. Still, that doesn't stop me from ending conversations with her as quickly as possible.

Actually, right now I keep having this urge to do things to annoy HER! Like every time she starts talking on the phone (unless it's a legitimate work-related call) I start tapping my pen on my desk!

Ummmm...You might want to rethink the tapping bit. You don't want to start down the slippery slope of retribution. You're also taking the focus away from what you should be doing. It seems to me that the music route is going to a much more productive route for you to take.

What if the pen tapping doesn't bother her at all? You haven't accomplished anything more than riling yourself up more.

Ya know what writerhick, you're absolutely write. (Pun intended, sorry I couldn't resist. ) I've really got to get off this vindictive kick I've been on lately. I really wish I could take a LONG vacation! Actually, I overheard Ms. Annoying telling someone that she's booked a trip to Florida for January to visit her friend. I was ecstatic! It'll be like a vacation for me too! I hope she can go for two weeks!
