or it could be the legal drugs, prostitution, no drinking age, being the pedophile and child porn capital of the world etc. etc.

The Bible does reference enjoying sin for a season; so I guess they are, but there will come a time!

Happiness is a human state of being. Joyfulness is a spiritual state of being. Happiness is fleeting. Joyfulness is eternal. I'll take joy.

Surprising, given their very high suicide and alcoholism rates. Although I guess dead folks, and dead drunk folks, probably aren't filling out surveys.

Well Americans, especially those on the far right, claim our country is sliding into the abyss of moral decay, so how could one feel happy with that!

If somebody is dead, can they still be drunk? Technically, I don't think that's possible anymore once you've died. Its like the ultimate sober-up.

Staying on topic, I'd like to know how Denmark really came across as being the happiest country in the world. According to the article, they only asked two simple questions. How do you determine happiness out of that?

Thanks for posting, rlj. I think it's facinating.

Another researcher on the same topic is Rick Steves. He was interviewed on NPR -you can find it on his website.

Peace and God bless,

Me thinks you got your nations mixed up.

legal drugs = Holland (Nederlands)

prostitution = Same, although it is also legal in Denmark

no drinking age - You have to be 18 to buy a drink at a bar, 16 to buy alcohol in a store.

being the pedophile and child porn capital of the world - Eh? That used to be Thailand - I think it is currently Indonesia.

Why the sour grapes?

They didn't only have two questions - they only kept two questions from the original survey in 1981.

But all Danes speak english, so you can get by fine

Gunlaws are much stricter than in the US.

Basically the avarage Joe cannot just buy a gun. We have no gun-stores as in the US - only huntingstores have rifles.

If you want to have a firearm in the home, however, there are some legal ways. One is to join the Homeguard - the Danish militia (not army) - and you will get to keep you assultrifle at home. You will also be booked up on training some weekends.

Or you can get a hunters license. Then you can keep your rifle at home - but no guns, assultrifles etc.

Finally you can join a local rifle association. After two years of membership and regular practice you can keep your gun at home.

Basically very few people have guns in the house for defense.

If you are caught with a firearm you shouldn't have, there is up to two years in prison as punishment.
On the plusside we have very few shooting accidents and gun-related crime are lower, although some gang-types have recently stepped it up. Most violent deaths in Denmark is stabbings.

We had some exchange students from Germany and Denmark one summer. One was a girl of Korean ancestry who spoke only Danish and English. It is then that I also realized what a melting pot Europe is becoming.

BTW, sounds like responsible gun laws. You can have them but you have to be trained first. Some states here in the US don't even have that. No wonder the rest of the world still thinks we're a bunch of cowboys. Our current President does nothing to dispel that image either. Of course he's from Texas too!

I seriously doubt that. Never heard that one before.

I think we have the same amount of homosexuals as everybody else, although we seem to be more tolerant about. I have a larger than avarage number of friends, and I know 2 confirmed homosexuals.

I think there are quite a number of myths outthere.

Suicide numbers are not alarming. We're number 27, while the US is number 43. France is 18.

List of countries by suicide rate

Hey - found one about homosexuality.
quote:

Denmark

1992: A random survey found that 2.7% of the 1,373 men who responded to their questionnaire had homosexual experience (intercourse).

United States

1990: "Homosexuality/Heterosexuality: Concepts of Sexual Orientation" published findings of 13.95% of males and 4.25% of females having had either "extensive" or "more than incidental" homosexual experience.

Demographics of sexual orientation
