We are putting together a trip to Washington DC. We felt this is the perfect time to take our dd before beginning an official study of US History. Has anyone ever camped near Washington? We have a camper and plan to take that. There is a KOA nearby. We would like to take the transit system into the mall because of parking issues, etc. Any suggestions of how to get around easily? Anybody stayed at the KOA? Thanks

Can't speak to the camping. We are lucky enough to have friends living in Falls Church, VA. We found a GREAT way to get around though. We drove 15 minutes from our friends' house each morning to Arlington National Cemetery and parked there. From there, we took this shuttle service into DC and it was fabulous! So easy!!

We stayed in a pop up camper at Pohick Bay Regional Park before- it was a pretty nice place- had older BUT CLEAN shower houses and the like.

To make a camping reservation at Pohick Bay Regional Park please call 703-339-6104. 6501 Pohick Bay Drive, Lorton, Virginia 22079

I believe the nearest Metro Rail station to this camp ground would be the Springfield station 6880 Frontier Drive, Springfield, VA 22150

From Smithfield to the Smithsonian fares:
Smithsonian $ 2.35 reduced $ 4.15 regular $ 2.05 senior 13.57 Miles 38 min.

Suggest that you go the day pass or week pass- Passes and fare cards(Scroll down to the MetroRail stuff) One Day MetroRail Pass $7.80, OR 7-Day Fast Pass $39 Valid for seven consecutive days of unlimited MetroRail travel.

Google maps says that it is 10.6 mi – about 21 mins from the campground to the Springfield Metro station.

Definitely do the metro. Finding parking in DC in the summer is enough to pull your hair out.

DO NOT buy a map from someone on the street- they are given away FREE in the museums.

We always took the Metro Rail from springfield to smithsonian stations when we went up. We lived in the area off and on from 1996-2004

I don't know anything about the facilities at any of the parks or campsites. But, the KOA that I found is in Millersville, MD and that may or may not be convenient. If it were me making the trip, I'd take a look at the Pohick Park suggestion because it is nearer to several historic homes (Mount Vernon, Gunston Hall) and relatively easy to get to the metro. Another park to consider is Prince William Forest Park that is about 10 miles south of the Pohick Park. If you stay there, the Marine Museum is a MUST SEE!

I used to produce video materials for the Smithsonian and the National Park Service and I can't think of another museum that is more impressive than the National Museum of the Marine Corps.

I see that you are traveling from Western North Carolina. If you travel up I-81, please take a side trip to Bedford, Virginia to visit the National D-Day Memorial. From there you can travel to either Charlottesville (Montecello) or Appomattox Courthouse on your way to DC. The roads of Virginia are just one huge history lesson!
