The discussion about Stairway to Heaven has got me wondering. We all know that the term "best" is highly subjective. What the best song is depends completely on individual taste. So what's your choice for the best rock song?

I'm still trying to pick mine. I'm kind of leaning towards "Supper's Ready" by Genesis. But that's not for sure.

Very tough call. I've got three that are tied for personal best: The Immigrant Song by Zeppelin; Roller by April Wine; Forever by Y&T.

I'm listening to the third disc of "Platinum Collection" right now. For me, I've always liked "The Knife" - I guess because Genesis Live was the first Genesis album I ever bought. "Musical Box" is right up there, too.

As for the original question, mine would probably be something by Yes - Siberian Khatru or Heart of the Sunrise come to mind.

"Peace Sells... But Who's Buying" by Megadeth

BTW, love Yes and Genesis too! I saw them many times in my "concert going days". If I just had all that money I spent on concerts and music invested in Microsoft....

My financial planner told me to invest in CDs. I thought he meant the musical kind!

BTW, Musiciandad you reminded me of an almost forgotten group Y & T (Yesterday and Tomorrow) I'll have to dust those off and give 'em another listen.

That was always my favourite album by them but I liked "Good Mourning/Black Friday" the best.

I got to see them live a year ago. They still are one of the tightest bands in the business. Ann Wilson is definitely IMO the Greatest Female Rock Vocalist OF ALL TIME!!!!!! If you get a chance to see them live, don't walk but run to get tickets!!!!

That one's definitely on my greatest of all time list as well. I'm glad Dave became a Christian!

BTW, I almost forgot, Pink Floyd "Comfortably Numb" was my favorite song by them. I especially liked Gilmour's guitar solo that always without fail gave me chills every time I heard it.

"Dark Side of the Moon" is one of everybody's favorite shows they hold at the Laserium at Griffith Park Observatory in the hills above Hollywood.

I would love to go see them live! I'm working on it for this summer when I'm in Ga. They'll be in Atlanta when I'm there. A friend sent me Ann Wilson's new CD (Hope & Glory)and she still rocks!

Dancing in the Dark by Bruce Springsteen

ETA: Love the above, but there are others of his that are just as good. Like Hungry Heart, Born to Run, Glory Days, Working on the Highway (this has me up & grooving even if I'm the only one in the room doing so, hee.)

Also yeah, humbleinspirit, great U2 song and great video, too.

She played a few songs off that album at the show. She even sings, "Rock n Roll" better than Robert Plant. Sorry Zeppelin fans but it's true!!!

Actually that's the description of the folder. The description of THIS thread is favorite rock songs.

There is nothing in our TOS that says all music discussed in this folder has to be of Christian orientation.

balderdash! I never heard it but I still say balderdash. Just because.

Seriously I wasn't able to find a live version of Heart doing "Rock and Roll". But I have a live version from them of "Stairway to Heaven" (a bonus track on the "Little queen" remaster) that was pretty good but honestly I prefer Plant for that one (well the studio version at least). She put more soul into it than Plant did but Plant was a little more dramatic. It was quite faithful while at the same time having Heart's unique stamp on it. As far as my preference it is a matter of taste I suppose. Of course in order to be truly fair I would have to have heard them around the same amount of times and I don't have time to let Heart's version catch up.

Also in my brief search I found live covers of "Black Dog" and "The Battle of Evermore" so I think I know what their favorite album side was growing up.

I have to say I didn't think there was an answer but I heard the best rock song ever (or reheard it) last night.

The theme from the 60s series "Batman" (with Adam West). You can have your deep lyrics and tempo changes; your instrumental prowess and build up. I'll take the directness of the music and the beautiful simplicity of the lyrics in this great classic from the 60s.

Close second: the theme from The Green Hornet. Nice simulation of "insect radar" with the trumpet (think its the trumpet). But unlike "Batman" no lyrics relegates it to second place.

OK I got nothing.

Well I have a few years on you so I am balder than you!

I didn't think they recorded a live version. Too bad! It's definitely one of favorites that they do live.

The greatest rock song ever is "Highway Star" by Deep Purple...the live version from "Made In Japan".

Nothing beats that one! To me, anyway.

I prefer the older Bruce by far over anything he did after 1980. Songs like Rosalita, Adam Raised a Cain, Kitty's Back, and the entire Darkness album are, in my opinion, far superior to anything on Bored in the USA or anything newer. I've said it before, when he stopped singing about cars and girls and got all political he lost me. One exception is the Pete Seeger tribute he did. But you can keep anything after The River.

the theme from The Green Hornet
aka Flight of the Bumblebee by the late great Al Hirt. My former guitar teacher rocks that song.

Now then, after careful deliberation, I have decided that the greatest rock song ever is Stairway to Heaven. No, only kidding. I choose Chicago's "Ballet for a Girl in Buchannon" suite from their second album. It starts with "Make Me Smile" and runs through "Now More Than Ever". Back then they played it as one long piece instead of chopping it into the singles versions. The Live From Carnegie Hall version shows how tight these guys were.

Edited to fix typos.

Stairway to heavy? That stairway only goes one way! DOWN.. you can't go up a stairway to heave-y...

Let's see, otherwise adding my worthless two cents, I would have to say the greatest ROCK song eva is...(drumroll please)....

Aqualung- Jethro Tull.... (LOL) sucka's...

Seriously tho! I think Hey Jude! Would have to top my list of greatest Rock EVA! Followed by Londong Calling-The Clash, then like Layla-Derek and the Dominos

This is too hard a question.

If we're talking about songs that make us want to rock out--I like Sweet Child o' Mine.

I like all the Heart songs mentioned, too. I saw them on their acoustic tour some years back and that was totally amazing!

Seriously I wasn't able to find a live version of Heart doing "Rock and Roll".

It's on their first "Greatest Hits" album. (Double LP/One CD)
