What was the purpose of putting verse numbers? How did that originate? And are we using the bible correctly by isolating a verse and using it for however it suits our needs?

quote:
What was the purpose of putting verse numbers? Basically, just to help it make things easier to find. Otherwise we'd be stuck with, "It's found in... You know... The book of Romans, maybe somewhere around the middle there... After the part about justification..." quote:
How did that originate? In man. Heh, I forget when exactly, but they were definitely added well after the original authors. In fact, the original manuscripts didn't even have punctuation marks, and were written entirely in capitol letters. quote:
And are we using the bible correctly by isolating a verse and using it for however it suits our needs? Absolutely, positively not. This is not the say that individual verses can't carry weight in and of themselves, but they must always be studied in context to make sure they really deserve the weight we give them.

Romans 7:25 - 8:1 was a horrible place to separate a verse and a chapter. chapters and verses are great for referencing, I am glad they are there, but I think they get in the way of the flow of reading sometimes. the story of the verse and chapter separations is interesting, and if I had more time, I would put the link in here for ya!

The verse numbers were first added in the 1500s by one man who was trying to separate it so it would be easier to reference and find where certain passages were. The chapter breaks were inserted earlier also for purpose of making things easier to find. The chapter breaks as well as the verses were not done in English version but in Greek version which does not have the same style. As for using them as they are being used now no it is not correct. All Scripture should be read and used in context. If you have a bible that breaks lines at verses you should find in the preface how they distinguish paragraphs. Some use a paragraph symbol others will bold the verse numbers. This can help with getting context. Other translations will break it down by paragraphs.
