I'm not sure about the main part of the party, but can you buy a whole cheesecake from Cheesecake Factory? Maybe make your daughter's favorite dinner and have the party at your house with all the girls. 12 is a lot to cook for, but buying appetizers for 12 at Cheesecake Facotry is worse. LOL! Then they can all play makeover with some make-up or something and do their hair really nice together and take pictures. Or, maybe instead of making dinner, you can make appetizers, that's not quite so much work as a whole meal. You can even get some frozen stuff like quiche and pizza rolls and stuff. Sparkling cider in fancy glasses would be kinda cool too.

The Cheesecake Factory was only going to be 2 girls, dd and I. I cannot afford 12 girls out to dinner plus the makeup thing, etc.

At this point, can you turn it into a simple slumber party, with popcorn, pizza, cake, and a movie (a decent one, of course)?

Mom, your daughter is 14 and it's time for some parenting boundaries that encourage her to take responsibility.
You made one birthday plan. If it doesn't suit her, simply tell her what the budget is and let her make plans that suit her better.
Your makeup counter thing sounds more like a mom-and-daughter thing that might be even special-er if it was just the 2 of you, so perhaps that outing could be your 'gift'. As for the party, she is probably more than capable of coming up with her own 12 girl idea.

What about a spa type party? I am a youth leader and I've had my girls over several times for pedicures and a movie. I bought several dishpans from Wal-Mart (about a dollar or so each) and picked up some foot scrubs, soaks, and lotions (Target has these in their dollar section fairly often) and had the girls bring their favorite nail polishes. (Or, you could pick up a few of those as well.) We used hand towels to dry our feet and did the pedicures while watching a fun movie.
You could have chips and drinks around to munch on. All in all, it shouldn't cost too much (maybe $20-25?) and would be fun. :)

My dd is incredibly independent and would happily plan her party. It is just something I like to do with/for her. The makeup counter was a suprize, she said it would be fun but I could tell she was a bit disappointed. I asked her what she wanted to do and she said that she thought the makeup thing would be fun but since this is possibly her last year with a lot of these girls she thought a larger party would be nice. She's in 8th grade at a charter school, the kids come from all over our county, high school will scatter many of them.
My kids get "friend" party's one yr and family parties the next. Their friend party is generally more expensive and/or at a venue but this year dd understands that the budget is being tightened and the party has to be budget minded.
She really is a great kid.

Would she like a baking party? She and her friends could make a couple kinds of cookies or something, and whatever they want to eat? Just a thought...I would have liked that at that age.

YOur local Mary Kay consultant would love to come over and do age appropraite make overs for the girls. Check with parents and ask that if the girls would like to make purchases they be allowed to bring money. Mary Kay did this for one of my dd friends. We got some great skin care products out of the deal. It was a 13 yr old party.
The of course...also have cheesecake...teehee

You can still have a make up party; just do it at home. If you have an older teenager who could come in and give them tips that would be great. Or do it yourself. Buy enough small mascaras and blushes or get samples from an Avon dealer. Have the girls bring curling irons, hot rollers, and their best clothes--to trade around. You could also buy or borrow some old prom/bridesmaids dresses or other dressy clothes. Let the girls do make overs and have a fashion show. You could even have them dress up in funny outfits and tape a show.
We did parties like this when my daughter was younger and they had so much fun dressing up and filming each other. Once they even did a pretend talk show. If you have the girls bring stuff it doesn't cost you much.
For food, this age usually likes trying healthy food, so you could do hummus and spinach dips with pita bread or tortilla chips. Serve fresh fruit and perhaps cookies and you won't even need a cake.

There are so many things you could do!! She said 12 girls - that's a lot for a sleepover!! But coming from all over the county, it might be hard to do just an afternoon so can you handle that many for a sleepover?? Did she give any idea what she'd enjoy doing or what she had in mind? Is there a book series she really likes or is into at the moment you could go off of? You could really still do the makeup lesson idea at home, like someone suggested, with a Mary Kay consultant.
I love planning my kids parties! I've done some absolutely legendary/notorious parties for my kids' birthdays! Honestly, I've created monsters and now I'm trying to talk them down but it's not working.
When my dd broke down to dh the morning of her 4th birthday party and said "I don't want ladybugs, that's what mommy wants!" I knew I had to start including her in the plans. We've planned her last five birthdays together and she's got some really fun ideas. I am actually raising quite the little party planner in her if I do say so. She has some good ideas - sometimes over the top...no idea where she gets that! ;-)

The Cheesecake Factory is quite pricey. I can't imagine trying to pay for 12 girls. I can't afford to eat there just by myself.

Have you decided on a plan? What is the final decision? It is so difficult pleasing teens. If she is anything like mine...the guest lists changes daily...teehee
