I think it can be both. Some people are born lactose intolerate, but I know that as you age you can become lactose intolerate. If I remember correctly, many have decreasing tolerance to lactose as they age, but it has something to do with genetics (and/or certain diseases for some people). I'd say it's the lac operon, but humans don't have those. I think for some people, as they age, they don't produce the enzyme/catalyst that breaks down lactose.

Yeah I'm one of the ethnic groups that has a high rate of it. I just never thought of it because I eat a lot of dairy and I used to drink milk every day.

Plus mine isn't that bad so I'll deal with it somehow. I know some people get sick immediately but I am not one of those.

Yes, I think so. I used to drink milk all the time when I was little, and now I can't even eat yogurt. I can eat cheese, but that's pretty much it.

It can happen anytime, although it's very rare to be born lactose intolerant. Like less then 2% of babies are ever lactose intolerant, usually they are allergic to the protein in milk.

Lactose intolerance can be the product of other disease as well. My husband is gluten intolerant, has celiac disease, and lactose intolerance is a part of that for him---not everyone, but he definitely has it. So he uses Almond Breeze (Original) as a milk substitute.

I have been known to become lactose intolerant when my mother-in-law serves us her famous Watergate salad.

LOL. I had to look it up too!

You may find that switching to organic dairy products causes you less of a problem. Also, it's possible that yogurt and cheese cause less problems for you than milk.

It definitely can happen at any age. For some people it's possibly "reversible". Lactose Intorance is actually a shortage of the enzyme lactase. Often, if people remove, or drastically decrease their dairy consumption, or consumption of items that have lactose in them, over time they start to produce less lactase. Be slowly increasing your consumption of said items, somethimes the body will also slow increase it's production of lactase.

Otherwise, lactase "supplements" can be bought over the counter.

For the vast majority of folks, you develop it as you get older. It is very unusual to be born that way. It's actually the "norm" not the exception for most of the world. Believe it or not - it's actually a genetic mutation to NOT be lactose intolerant as an adult! This is true in the animal kingdom as well - it's why you shouldn't give milk to adult cats.

The good news is my favorite thing in life: LACTAID!!!! Thank you Jesus for Lactaid! Here is a link to their website - which also has a lot of good info on lactose intolerance.

Lactaid (and the generic versions) is the enzyme lactose intolerant folks are lacking. If I take it (I just need to make sure to take enough!) when I eat dairy, I don't have any problems eating all kinds of foods - in fact, as I type this, I am eating cheesecake (and it's really good!)! It's also an easy way to see if this is the issue for you - it doesn't hurt you to take it so you can try taking some and eat dairy and see if that helps the digestive issues. Just make sure to take enough. If it solves the problem, then lactose intolerance is the issue and you just need to take the enzyme when you eat or drink dairy. All my favorite foods are dairy, so this is important to me. I eat a TON of cheeses and such - so I take a lot of lactaid!

Also, different folks have different degrees of intolerance. For me, much of my dad's side of the family is lactose intolerant. Since my dad is, I had a 50/50 chance of having the issue. My twin isn't, I am. I can have a slice of cheese and be fine. Much more than that and I am miserable. Some folks can't eat much of anything without trouble though. The genetic aspect is why many ethnic groups have extremely high rates of it.

I think the important thing is to know whether it's lactose intolerance or something else causing the troubles. Many people confuse this was a milk allergy and that is something completely different. Lactose intolerance really isn't a big deal - the only different between my brother and I, is that I carry around lactaid so I can eat the same stuff he does without a pill. You wouldn't want to do that with an allergy but it's perfectly safe to do that with lactose intolerance.

On a side note, many of us who are lactose intolerant can eat yogurt with no problems. The bacteria in yogurt (with live cultures!) helps break the lactose down, so you can eat yogurt without the gastric issues.

I bought some fast acting stuff until I could go to costco and get the big package.. cause it was expensive.

It said to take 3 of the regular is that about right?

One of the problems I think is the activia. I am going back to the all natural yogurt for a few weeks and seeing if that's it.

Yes! There are many foods that might become a problem as you age. Allergies appear out of nowhere.

Thankfully, black pepper is the only thing that upsets my tummy. Oh, too much sour cream as a dip might make me feel a bit icky...

Hubby has several things that bother him now. My mother has developed multiple chemical allergies.

Check out the following specials available NOW!
Puerto Rico for $376., Costa Rica, $374., Bahamas, several to choose from for $400., St. Martin for $449. Holland for $629....... and many more!

Mine hit at age 35. I can eat cheese in moderate amounts, and drink skim milk, but ice cream sends me into a bathroom meltdown.

I was in college. I've also had to learn the "hard way" how much lactose is in certain foods. The most recent was when I had chicken fried steak and didn't think about the gravy being milk based until after the "effects" hit me.... Oops...
