From HERE. quote:
OTTAWA — The Canadian government moved Friday to ban polycarbonate infant bottles, the most popular variety on the market, after it officially declared one of their chemical ingredients toxic. The action, by the departments of health and environment, is the first taken by any government against bisphenol-a, or BPA, a widely used chemical that mimics a human hormone. It has induced long-term changes in animals exposed to it through tests.

All the stores I've been in have withdrawn bottles, sippy cups, soothers etc. that are known to contain it, but I'm waiting a week or two for it to settle out, because there were no regulations to disclose whether they have BPA in them, so the ones left might still contain it for now. After this announcement there is a 60 day public response period before they implement their intended ban. At that time, I expect there will also be an implementation period, to allow industry to find ways to work around this while still producing bottles as needed.

I've also noticed over the last few weeks that most stores have withdrawn the bottles and other items (including adult water bottles!) that have it in them. The major stores were great at letting people know that they pulled them. It's smaller stores that I'm still careful of and wouldn't buy from until their is a complete ban.

HERE is a better list that Ryanne posted in the Baby Chat thread. If it has 3, 6 or 7 on the bottom of the plastic bottle, sippy, tupperware, etc. it's not safe.

This is what really caught my attention when I was reading this morning- quote:
A 2008 draft report by the U.S. National Toxicology Program (NPT) agreed with the panel, concluding that "there is some concern for neural and behavioral effects in fetuses, infants, and children at current human exposures," and that there is "some concern for bisphenol A exposure in these populations based on effects in the prostate gland, mammary gland, and an earlier age for puberty in females." The NPT also concluded that there is negligible concern that "exposure of pregnant women to bisphenol A will result in fetal or neonatal mortality, birth defects or reduced birth weight and growth in their offspring" or that it causes adverse effects in exposed adults.[16] Taken from WIKI article. And this- quote:
In 2006 Europe banned all products made for children under age 3 containing BPA, and as of Dec. 2006 the city of San Franscisco followed suit. In March 2007 a billion-dollar class action suit was commenced against Gerber, Playtex, Evenflo, Avent, and Dr. Brown's in Los Angeles superior court for harm done to babies caused by drinking out of baby bottles and sippy cups containing BPA. So, to be certain that your baby is not exposed, use glass bottles. From HERE

I saw this article on yahoo news and figured it would interest those who are researching the BPA Nalgene to stop using BPA

The Medela bottles that come with the pumps have a number 6 on the bottom of the bottle. Numbers 3, 6 & 7 are unsafe. You know what bothers me....PVC is number 3, so it's considered unsafe. Almost every fairly newer home has PVC pipes as their water pipes. That means our tap water that we drink and cook with and bathe in could possibly have BPA in it.

Z Recommends said Medela was made of polypropeline which is number 5 on the bottom of the bottle. I just looked at a Medela bottle IRL that my friend gave me 6 months ago, and it has a number 6 on the bottom, which is polystyrene. I'd stick with looking at what the plastic says on the bottom of it in the middle of the recycling triangles and seeing if it is one of the unsafe numbers.

The medela bottles are still BPA free. Or at least are supposed to be according to everything I have seen and read - including the packages. That has actually been a big point for them over the last year is that they have always been BPA free. Don't know about the polystyrene issue, is that yet another problem or does that mean they really aren't BPA free? This whole mess is driving me nuts! I just chucked some bottles and bought more only to find that I mixed up the types at the store (some brands have both types out now )and got another batch with BPA. I think I might just bite the bullet and get glass ones to use at home. I wanted to avoid that now (used them and the medela bottles when Bug was a newborn) since he holds his own bottles but I guess that is what I am going to have to do. Kris

BPA typically falls into the #7 category on the bottom of plastic containers ... And it is quite pathetic now when you walk into a baby section of Walmart/Zellers/wherever here in Ontario ... there are pretty much NO baby bottles (including the ones on the 'safe' list) with the exception being an occasional glass bottle (which run about $20 each!). I know a LOT of people IRL who have just had babies or are about to within the next couple of weeks ... a few of them are definitely bottle feeding, and the rest have said they are going to nurse, but would like to have a few bottles on hand in case there are problems (like one gal just had a reduction prior to becoming pregnant, so she isn't sure she'll produce enough) ... and when I talked to one of the department managers, they said they have no idea when a new supply will be arriving (of 'safe' bottles) ... it could be two months or more, since it is a country-wide ban, and they need to ship to all stores!!

For those who live in Canada: Zellers will give you an Hbc store credit for any baby bottles they sold with BPA in them. Just take your bottles to the customer service, they have a list of what they are accepting. You will get the last sale price for them. You don't need a receipt, and they can be old and used (again, as long as they are ones they sold when they pulled them off the shelves.) Let everyone you know about this. Zellers isn't actually advertising that they are doing this.
