Well, the title says it all. I've tried probably half a dozen different varieties of Campbell's, Progressive, and a couple others and none of them come close to tasting like good new england clam chowder. Yet, among restaurants - even the corner deli, I've never had a bad one.

Any ideas on how I can bring this wonderful deliciousness home?

-Dan.

I'm like you--I love good clam chowder, but have yet to find a good canned one. Bear Creek makes a really good dry potato soup mix, you might try making that and adding clams in the last 5-10 minutes.

I don't like canned, but I have done well with the frozen bases--I know Costco has one, and I think Ivar's makes some.

Clam chowder isn't that hard to make, though. Maybe you could mix up a big batch and freeze it in serving sizes?

I'm surprised nobody's asked this yet: Which type of clam chowder, Manhattan (orange) or New England (creamy)?

I don't know if this brand is available where you are, but I've had a couple of the bisques and they're pretty good, for canned.

Snow's Clam Chowder isn't bad, and I like the Wolfgang Puck CC also, but really, nothing beats homemade.

I did say in the OP that it was NE clam chowder, but really, there is only one clam chowder.

And it isn't red.

Ivars makes great frozen clam chowder.

My favorite canned clam chowder is Jakes Clam Chowder.

IMO, they all need doctoring....so what I do is this:

Start with the least offensive can of clam chowder, then add another can of clams, some cream (half/half or milk), chopped up taters and some corn. Salt, pepper and simmer for a lil bit.

Serve with yummy oyster crackers.

At that point you might as well make your own since you've added 90% of the ingredients already.

I was thinking the same thing as I wrote it down, but I still do it that way...dunno why
