Has anyone read this book and/or done the study guide that goes with it? I am looking for a really good book on just being a woman, not a wife or a mom, just a woman. Please do not get me wrong I love and treasure those two roles in my life, but I really want to focus on who I am in the Lord as Michelle, the woman. Someone had mentioned this book to me and I thought I would see if anyone else had read it and your opinion. Thanks!

This book was recommended to me by a friend. She was so excited about me reading it that she bought it for me and sent it to me. I have started reading it. It touches on parts of me that I have forgottten about and other parts that I have chose to bury. I like this book because I will find freedom as I read it. I just have to read it in parts as I examine myself.

CONCLUSION: yes I recommend it!

Chelle- I've been wanting to read this book for awhile. I just bought it from a used bookstore. I can't wait for a nice sunny-day to sit outside and start reading it.

I have been wondering about this book for years, but something always makes me not buy it. I don't know why.

I enjoyed reading it but it didn't really do anything for me. I passed it on to my mom. There might be a treasure or two in Captivating that might resonate with you.

I really liked reading a book about the Bad Girls of the Bible. I wish I could remember the exact title. I guess it all depends on what stage of life you are on, which book will speak to you.

Great book. Highly recommend it. Speaks to our innermost desires as women and why those desires get ignored, squelched, .....or just plain stomped on.

A girl from church who has read the book twice is suppose to bring me her copy tonight at the church softball game. I hope she remembers, but if not I am definitely going next week after pay day. I was telling my sister about the book too. She is going through somethings right now and doesn't feel like she can hear from the Lord. I don't know if this book will help her with that or not, but I told her I would let her know how it was.

I'm currently reading the book 'Breaking Free' (as Queen said, slowly as I examine myself) and I find it wonderful as well...it might be a good one for your sister Chelle. I haven't yet read Captivating but it's on my list. Thanks everyone for your insights on it.

I've read it and didn't like it. The stereotypical things just don't apply to everyone.

My BGF ( as in 'take a bullet for that girl' friend) was leading a book study on Captivating and asked me to come, knowing that John Eldridge makes my skin crawl

I tried to do it for her, tried to take one for the team....really, I did but I just couldn't finish the study.

I agree with the stereotypes comments. Same thing with "Wild at Heart"...that "every man" isn't my hubby, my young adult son, my son-in-law....

Very little Bible content and much pop-culture references and psycho-pop analysis

Based on the reactions from the ladies in the study here is my take:

If you earthly father let you down, this book will speak to your soul. If you had a great dad and/or a great husband you will want to tell Stasi to just grow up! Playing princess is only cute when you are under the age of 10!!

We used the DVD with the study though and that could make a big difference. I didn't "bond" with those ladies at all. I just wanted to introduce them to my mom who had five siblings die before the age of 30 and grew up in the mountains where women died in childbirth and everyone knew a truly hungry family. Show them that having a father who didn't applaud when you danced on the coffee table in your "twirly skirt really didn't have to ruin your life if you would just stop whining and get on with your life, for crying out loud!

Guess I can't really recommend it, huh?

LOL...after thinking about it, I can see that as being very true of this book...lol

I wouldn't get anything out of it if I were on my own....or through a dvd of the study.....the group of ladies I studied it with though were great and we really got off the beaten path quite a lot with it.....it really opened up more roads and rabbit trails that we followed.

I do suppose it is a good place to spark conversation. Perhaps that is the best thing about most self-help books.

Well I read more reviews online and a lot people didn't like it for the same reasons mentioned here. I have always had a good relationship with both my dad and my mom. I am not so sure that it would do much for me in that case. I think I will keep looking.

I've had a good relationship with both my parents too, Chelle. Once I get around to reading it, I'll have to let you know what I think.

I read (most) of it and all the pop culture references drove me nuts.

A book I enjoyed that you may too (I know you didn't ask tho... ) is "Lies Women Believe" I can't think of the author, but it's sitting on my book shelf and I can check if you want to know.
I can glance through it for you real quick if you want, but I am pretty sure it was for women, not wives and I know definitely not just for moms! (As I wasn't a mom when I read it)

K, it's by Nancy Leigh DeMoss.

The back of the book says

"We are like Eve. We have all experienced defeats and failures, trouble and turmoil. We have all experienced a selfish heart, a shrewish spirit, anger, envy and bitterness. And we ache to do things over, to have lives of harmony and peace.
... Nancy DeMoss exposes those areas of deception most commonly believed by Christian women:
*Lies about themselves: I should not have to live with unfulfilled longing.
*Lies about sin: I cannot walk in consistent victory over sin.
*Lies about their marriage: If I submit to my husband I will be miserable.
*Lies about their emotions: I can't control my emotions.
*Lies about their circumstances: I just can't take it anymore.

Nancy DeMoss sheds light on how we can be delivered from bondage and set free to walk in God's grace, forgiveness and abundant life. This book offers the most effective weapon to counter and overcome Satan's deceptions - God's truth."

The people on the back of the book recommending it are Henry and Marilyn Blackaby, Elisabeth Elliot and Charles Colson. There are more inside the cover if you care
And the forward is by Elisabeth Elliot.

Oh, and the full name of the book is "Lies Women Believe and the Truth that Sets Them Free."
I think I am going to re-read this book now
