Charlie Brown is one of my very favorite characters! Snoopy is a real hoot! Peppermint Patty is interesting gift of gab! And Lucy has grown on me through the years too! Who are your favorites and why?

Charlie Brown is my favorite. I have always had a soft-spot in my heart for the underdog.

I grew up with these guys. For me it's not so much a character, as it is the relationships between the various characters. Charlie Brown and Linus have a good relationship with each other. Linus seems to be a part of Charlie Brown somehow. They have conversations where, if Linus were removed, it would be Chjarlie Brown talking to himself about something, and it wouldn't be weird at all, KWIM? And Charlie Brown and Lucy have this love-hate type of relationship. They seem to need to balance each other out somehow. He always asks her to hold the football for him and she always yanks it out of his way. Why doen't he ask someone else, like Linus, to holds the football? But he always asks Lucy, knowing she will not let him kick it. Then there's Lucy and Schroeder. She thinks she's "all that", so Schroeder HAS to love her, but he doesn't. But why does he tolerate her leaning on his piano all the time? What does he get from having her around? Big Hmmm...

One thing I've always wondered is why does everybody ALWAYS call Charlie Brown "Charlie Brown" and not just "Charlie"? None of the others seem to have a last name. Oh, yeah, Lucy and Linus are Van Pelts, but I can't recall any other last names. Oh, I almost forgot, Peppermint Patty always calls him "Chuck", but doesn't add the last name to it.

I could go on, but I won't. Interesting topic.

Yes, I never really thought of that before! It makes a lot of sense too!

I have always felt a little bit like Charlie Brown.... the odd ball or the blockhead. But Peanuts is a whole lot more than just a cartoon or a comic strip. The creator Charles Schultz wrote good Christian values into the story lines, in very humorous and meaningful ways.

I've always loved Snoopy's "Joe Cool", especially when Woodstock joins him with the shades on. Of the kids, Linus is my favorite. Mainly because of the scene in the Christmas special where he quotes Scripture.

I have always felt like the female version of Charlie Brown.

It was one of the very few cartoons that I liked growing up and the shows are part of the few happy memories for me.

The executives did not want to have Linus reciting the story of the birth of Christ from the Gospel of Luke (Lk 2:8-14); the network orthodoxy of the time assumed that viewers would not want to sit through passages of the King James Version of the Bible. Charles Schulz was adamant about keeping this scene in, remarking that "If we don't tell the true meaning of Christmas, who will?" And refused to allow the show unless it was included

Cool thread!
My favorite charachter would have to be snoopy,. Ilove how he listens and reacts when Schroeder is playing the piano. Interesting point about Charlie Brown always asking Lucy to hold the football. Maybe it has something to do with him not wanting to let her win so he keeps on asking her to hold the ball, so he can finally beat her. The Peanuts gang has always been my favorite cartoon.
The other day I substitute taught for a music teacher whose room was full of Charlie brown and Snoopy figurines, cartoon strips and posters. It was a fun room to be in.

Given Schulz' clout, the execs caved, figuring the whole thing would just be a write-off.

PBS has a series called "American Masters" where they profile important individuals in recent american history including Schulz, Aretha Franklin, Einstein, Les Paul, and Ahmet Ertegun (founder of Atlantic records). The episode on Schulz is very good (actually, they're all really good).

I like Charlie Brown, but it always bugged me that we never saw the parents. The Thanksgiving special never made sense to me either, because a bunch of kids don't go have Thanksgiving together, they have it with their parents. Other than that, I liked it, though. I had a Peanuts lunchbox in 1st grade.

I like pretty much all the characters. I feel so sorry for Charlie Brown when he thinks he killed his little Christmas tree. I love that Christmas episode. It seems to be one of the few Christmas specials that do actually try to teach us the true reason we should celebrate Christmas. But it is done in such a "non-preachy" kind of way.
