I have a problem with churches becoming businesses selling products of any kind.

Yeah, it's hard to imagine a modern online news site that can't spell License.

I knew that. I just didn't see anything else worth commenting on.

Now if this were a Southern Baptist Church in southern Alabama, that'd be a story to comment on.

Hey this same "church" had their Hindu deity stolen. The link is on the right side of the page or click here.

*That* is a lot more disturbing than the first article .

The first article puzzled me--around here anyway, you do not need a license to serve alcohol at a wedding reception, only to sell it. Why are they selling wine at a wedding reception? That sounds kinda cheesy to me, regardless of the place.

That doesn't sound like much of a church to me, at all. Rowan needs to do some serious housekeeping, here and there.

Yes, it sort of takes I Corinthians 9, "I have become all things to all men" to a whole new level doesn't it? There is also a Buddha in the rectory of this church. The vicar's desire is to attract people to his church...problem is he doesn't care who they are, what they believe, or how much he has to compromise to get them.

This is in Wales which is a different culture than in America. Serving ale over there isn't much different then serving pop or soda here. It isn't abnormal for minors over there to drink in public places as long as an adult orders it. There are cultures around the world where drinking alcohol doesn't have the stigma that is associated with drinking here.

Besides, if Jesus showed up and wanted to recreate his first miracle the church woulnd't be allowed to serve the wine without the license. ; )

Yeah, the liquor licence doesn't jump out at me so much (think the obvious desire of some churches to use ordinary - ie alcohol containing - wine for communion).

The church having a Hindu "deity" is, however, concerning...

The Hindu thing is a problem. Having a church be a place where "everyone knows your name" wouldn't be one.

I don't even have to look at the site to know it's not surprising.

Israel did these things all through their history.
And they still wondered why God sent them into captivity? lol.

Ezekiel 8 shows the same things. Fetishes in the Temple itself.
We do it in America every week, we just don't recognize it.

The so-called church has always accomodated the pagans to get
them to increase the numbers. That's the name of the game isn't it?

I still wish I could find that song we did in Children's Church:
Numbers, numbers, numbers, that's the name of the game.............

The law does not say they cannot drink in the church.

quote:

A vicar is to apply for a drinks licence so he can sell wine and beer at his small village church.

quote:

Mr ap Iorwerth said he might also open a bar with proper pub-style pumps in a new church cafe in the future.

They want to SELL alcohol. Jesus did not perform His first miracle for someone to make a few bucks off the attendees.

As I understand it, they want to create a business where people would be encouraged to discuss spiritual issues. In Europe less than 10% will go to a formal church service. This could be a way of opening the door to a discussion that could lead to a conversion. Also, Luther had bible studies in a bar.

True! So could selling drugs and hiring strippers in countries where it's legal. Or selling erotic calendars of the church youth group. Oh wait... that's already been done.

Just my take, but I think there's a bit of a difference between meeting in a pub and turning the church into a pub.

What's the difference other than ownership? I am not talking about having church services there; just having it as a place where people can gather.

But isn't "church" where ever more than two are gathered?

So they can legally serve it themselves if they don't charge for it? If they wanted to rent out the facilities and have a "wet" reception they can just rent it out at a cost the reflects the booze since they will only be "serving" the booze, not "selling" it?

You miss my point. He is simply starting a business to satisfy a fleshly desire. No one needs booze to gain salvation.

(note to mods: this thread is about a church running a pub and not about drinking or not drinking alcohol.)

Sigh. I guess Luther was fleshly 'cause he drank beer. I guess Paul was wrong to tell Timothy to take a little wine.

There is nothing wrong with a church running a business for the purpose of reaching those who will not come to church. In Europe, less than 10% of people will come to church, yet the neighborhood pub is part of the culture. Why not have a place where people can come and discuss issues of faith over a cold one? And I don't mean Pepsi?

I guess I feel a line needs to be drawn somewhere between "preach the good news to all creation" and "build it and they will come."

In googling the church I found this -
One person buried in the Oval Churchyard is a gentleman of Warwick, William Shakespeare! I thought it was kinda interesting.

Anyway - Let them eat and drink - our church gets a license a few times a year to serve drinks at different events. I don't think its a big deal.

Now for the Hindu deity the church is working with a nearby multi-faith center, various religious symbols are placed on the window sills, with the idea that anyone from any faith can use the building. The 40 members of this church like the idea of thier church being open- and paid to buy a new staute. Agree or not its thier church.

Pax,
Mary
