Although I'm waiting for another news agency to back this story up, Fox News is reporting that Colin Powell may publicly endorse Senator Obama at the DNC convention in Denver this month.

Fair Warning: the source at issue is Bill Kristol, who is a pretty unreliable source.

Further, Powell's spokespeople are denying the report, so it's anyone's guess whether there is any truth here or not.

Let me guess...because Kristol is a conservative, he's unreliable, right?

And you accuse others of partisan sniping?

No, because Kristol has a journalistic track record of making inaccurate claims, and doing sloppy research, prompting his editors to issue retractions soon after.

Yes, most every reporter has made mistakes at one time or another, but Kristol seems to make a sport of it.

Look at this Colin Powell story, for example: Fox is already backing away from it just an hour after the original post was made so breathlessly - which makes me suspect Kristol has botched a story yet again.

I'm doing nothing of the sort. Try to avoid making kneejerk assumptions in the future. It does not reflect well on you.

Kristol is an extremely partisan political operative first, reporter second.

As such, my first assumption is that he's trying to raise expectations of a non-occurring event.

I saw awhile back Colin Powell on the view, and my impressiom was that he did not like BO, I may be wrong, but that was what it seemed to me.

I'm not sure why Powell hasn't endorsed anyone yet (he may not do so at all); one would think with their military backgrounds that he would have gotten behind McCain long ago.

My gut tells me he's going to avoid the question entirely. I'm thinking his political experience to date has left him with enough ill feelings that he's going to try to avoid stepping into it for a while longer.

It's a pity. The man has some snap.

That is a good point, maybe he is just tired of it all. I like Colin Powell, or I guess I mean I respect him, maybe it is the military life I have lived.

I think Powell's experience with the Bush administration (specifically, Rumsfeld and Cheney) left a foul taste in his mouth also regarding politics.

Yeah, instead of "political experience to date" I should have said "experience to date with certain politicians".

I am not sure what happened with Bush and all that, and really do not care. I will say Whatever happen Colin Powell said he was still their friend, and had great respect for the Pez. Colin Powell has class, and even if he had hard feelings, he is from the old school of do not down your leader. I respect the man, and wish he was our next president. Not because he is a token black ( I know I will get that) I wish he was because he has wisdom, and class, and dignity. These are things I believe Obama lacks, he is good talker, slick like a snake. I do not care if was an albino snake either way, I would not like him. McCain, is wise about some things, has experince, but he is double- minded. Leaving his first wife after an accident, and staying with his men enduring torture for them. It all just does not add up. I am sure Colin feels that way, or he would have endorsed someone. Face it, it might be hard to choose, because Obama being the first black man, but, being a military man knows McCain has more wisdom and experience. A fool knows a fool, and the wise know other wise people.

With that 'foul taste', would you classify it as a turkey?

Interesting that you hardly ever hear someone say anything negative about the man. That has to be some kind of record here in the U.S.

It's pretty rare to see someone that has such universal respect. Haven't voted Republican in a number of years, but he's one of a handful of people qualified for the presidents job for whom I'd make the exception. Absolutely.

Agreed. Powell strikes me as the kind of guy who'd be a bit like Eisenhower.

I think Powell has too much class to run for President (same goes for Condi Rice). I could see him serving in either a McCain or Obama Administration in some other role.
