I was diagnosed with Type 2 insulin resistant diabetes in March of last year. Since then I have wanted to fast and wasn't sure about how to go about it as a diabetic. I was sort of apprehensive about speaking to my doctor about it, although I will before I begin a fast, but I'd like to know if any of you have diabetes and have fasted. What did you do? Do you have any good advice about how to do it. If you are a doctor or a diabetic, your advice would be most welcome.

No one here can answer that question. It would be reckless of us to do so. My daughter is a diabetic and I would never encourage her to fast without having her check first with her personal physician, and that's what you should do also.

Only your doctor can tell you but as a diabetic I wouldn't fast.( that is just for me) If I go 5 hours without something to eat I feel hot, weak, and light headed. I am controling it with diet alone So don't want to have my sugar go too low. My doctor told me to also make sure I have a snack in between the meals to keep my sugar from dropping.

My hubby is diabetic, right now he is insulin dependent, but has in the past controlled his diabetes with pills or diet - with some success. He has also, in the last 6 years lost over 200 lbs. I would never consider he fast over anything. It would be TOO dangerous and I would rather he NOT end up in the ER or worse. He has done a fasting blood sugar before, but as soon as they lab took what they needed he ate. And that was only over night. He ate something at 9 PM and didn't eat til 8 AM the next morning. He was weak and lightheaded. I drove him to the dr. and brought his breakfast with us! But I've been married to my hubby for over 17 years now and was with him when he was diagnosed. I've seen what this has done to him over the years. BUT I would never dream of claiming to know what would be right for someone else to do. Discuss this with your doctor. I don't know you or the specifics of your diabetes and I'm not a doctor. The best advice you can get is to talk to your Doctor! Blessings, Garsy

I agree that this is something that you need to speak with your doctor about. Having said that... Perhaps consider other, very safe, ways for you to fast. From tea/coffee/coke/whatever your favourite drink is and just have water. From tv (other than perhaps the news). From the internet. From certain foods (I'm thinking more of 'treat' foods here than main meals).

I've never known anyone with diabetes who could safely fast. Talk with your doctor, but I'd be shocked if s/he said it was ok. However, as pointed out by other posters, there are other things that you can fast from that can be just as powerful of a spiritual discipline. You just need to find something that works for you and is meaningful to you.

You have received great advice. I am also diabetic, and the last time I tried to fast, I got very light-headed and didn't feel well, which was cured by eating. Another way to fast -- other than those already mentioned -- is to check with your doctor regarding what you could eat that would be a simple, bland diet that would give you enough sustenance to prevent damage. If you check your blood-sugar, I am sure they would suggest that you check it often through such a doctor-advised fast.

Hi, I am a type 1 diabetic and have been for the past 8 years. I got saved as a child at the age of four and starting fasting when I was eight years old. Since being a diabetic I have also fasted, there was a time when I fasted for 13 days.....The only thing that happened was I last a little weight but has never felt better. In fact if I don't eat for half a day I might feel a bit hypoglycemic but whenever I decide to fast I feel great. However it it is not random fast, I fasted only when I felt a great desire to so so. Since I am insulin dependent I consider carefully what I will do. If its a half day fast, I do not take insulin at the schedule time in the morning, I do not eat....but I have plenty of water and do a bit of exercise in the morning. I take Glargine or NPH as basal insulins so I know that I still have some insulin to keep me up to this time. Exercise helps the body to regulate glucose levels and absorb insulin much better so I don't have much problems, If I feel hypo which I usually don't I may have an orange. In this case I take my fast up to midday or 4pm. On a whole day fast I do the same, just a lot more worship on my feet.... I don't allow anything to determine my walk with God, and diabetes wont get that chance either. However those are my bold step in faith but it is good to speak with your doctor....in my opinion though it is God who wakes me from slumber kept me from complications and treat my diabetes...what more can be said

However it it is not random fast Fastings to draw closer to God should never be random. They need to be thought about and prayed about carefully and timed appropriately (it would perhaps be foolish to plan a fast to draw closer to God when you know that you've got some huge family/work/school commitment that would affect this time right in the middle of your fast). quote:

However those are my bold step in faith but it is good to speak with your doctor....in my opinion though it is God who wakes me from slumber kept me from complications and treat my diabetes...what more can be said Just because someone doesn't fast (from food) because of medical conditions, doesn't mean that their walk with God is affected. Nor does it mean that they are weak by fasting in other ways. While I am not diabetic, it's generally not good to alter medication in the way that you seem to be doing ~ especially without the knowledge of a doctor (you haven't mentioned whether your doctor is aware of what you do).

As others have stated, you really need to talk to your doctor before fasting to make sure it's safe for you. Also, as others have stated, you can fast from things other than food. quote:
