In this state, they have different options homeschooling can fall under. There is a Home Assist Program in our district, if you join, the P.School receives 90 percent of gov. funds (don't know for sure if that is the exact amount, but I know it is very high). Places like HSLDA does not help because you are considered public school. Then, there is also Dual Enroll where the school gets 10 percent of gov. funds. You are not considered public school, you can still be part of the HSLDA. You can pick 2-3 classes a year to put your child in and do sports. I was thinking about doing this for the sports. And, then there is part of me that doesn't want to get involved with public school at all. How do you guys feel about Dual Endrollment? Does anyone else have something like this in there area? Have you done something similar? How did it go?

Where we live (Indiana), they allowed the kids to take part in extra curricular activities even after we pulled them out of PS. They even offered the use of the library computers for A/R (accelerate reader) tests. DD, at the middle school level, could have enrolled for just math, or band, or gym. We were not offered any funds, in fact, I think they wanted to keep the kids enrolled part-time as it meant that they would get some or all of the funds from the gov't. That would have been fine with me, as they were offering a service, but we chose not to, as we did not want to be involved with the PS at that time. By the time we pulled the kids out of PS, the kids were both in need of a break from it all. Not sure if this helps. But I think that tying yourself to the PS could create challenges, depending on the state where you live. We have not experienced this, but as I said, we just wanted to separate ourselves from it all. ETA => Indiana

In my former state, FL, I know of many people who have chosen dual enroll, but not many who were thrilled with it at the local public school level. Now the community college level is a different story. I don't know of anyone who has ever been disappointed with that. A good friend dual-enrolled her son with the local high school so he could wrestle and play football. He also took a Spanish course. The Spanish course, while he earned an A, did not really teach him much. And even though he is an excellent wrestler, anytime the coach had to make a decision prioritizing players, home school boy got the short end of the stick. And even though he has been playing football for seven years, and the high school football coach was his community league coach as well, he is continually discriminated against because he is home schooled. After two years of trying to make this situation mutually beneficial, her son is: a) giving up football completely, since he was told he would only get to play JV even now his senior year, when every other senior no matter how small or how little experience is an automatic varsity player. b) returning to community league wrestling only, as that is still prominent in the considerations of college recruiters, and he will not be discriminated against there and c) he is taking Spanish at the community college, where he can actually be taught real, useful Spanish language competencies. You know your child and your school district better than anyone. Only you can decide if it will be a good idea for your family. Some things, like marching band, are pretty hard to find anywhere else. Also in the neighboring district they were trying to open music and art to home school in order to get the partial funding and hopefully keep these programs alive in the elementary grades. I do not think that those programs exist anymore though, what with budget cuts in FL and the classroom size amendment.

I know when I was curious about band, they were very friendly and told me people dual enroll often and homeschoolers are well accepted. But, that has been my only experience with public school here.

We are doing band at the middle school... the hs kids can do one activity, but there are no sports offered in 6th anyway. I just registered him today and only got a tiny bit of flack from the councilor. he made the comment that they could only do one activity because "we aren't getting funding for him. I just smiled and said, well we pay property tax, just like everyone else, and we have rentals, so we pay a large PTax bill... also, you get special education funding for Alli (dd who is a SR.) and gifted, and never actually had to provide services for her." so then he didn't say anything after that. (The G&T at the middle and high school is abysmal.) But the principal is a friend of my husbands, and even the teachers Jazz has had in the past have been very supportive. He is just a hard kid to fit into the ps mold... I think they appreciate not having to deal with that. But anyway, back to topic. There is also PACE, although I don't know what that stands for... where it is like a partial inrollment/co-op sort of thing. We looked into that for dd in Kinder... but it would have been a huge time commitment... They wanted about 20 hours a month, plus running her back and forth and I was working full time, we chose private school at that point. (plus, other peoples children are not my talent.)

Well, I have a meeting with a lady on Saturday to ask about dual enrollment. As far as I've been told, this lady is very nice, but she is hired to "recruit" homeschoolers into the home assist program here. So, my defense is up because I really don't even want to talk to her about Home Assist. Maybe I should be upfront with her. That is hard for me to do. We will see how it goes. I already know what I DON"T want, so maybe it will go okay.

After years of being "nickel and dimed (her words) at the private school, my mom was pleasantly surprised to find out all the the kids could do at the local public school for no charge. This even included private music lessons.

Sounds like your "spidey sense is tingling." You're aware of the heroin dealer's deal -- "the first one is free" -- and apprehensive about long-term consequences. Such as -- the privacy, freedom, and time you will have to surrender to The Beast! I'm praying for you that God will show you a truly creative alternative that honors Him and protects your family.
