Why should you not use a memorized formula prayer when you approach God?

Prayer is personal between you and God.

Some people like to talk to God as if they're talking to their parent or trusted friend. Others like to repeat "memorised formula prayers" like the Lord's Prayer, the Hail Mary and so on.

Either way is OK by God, because He likes to hear from us just like any parent likes to hear from their children from time to time.

I don't think its so much not using a memorized "formula" prayer to approach God. I think its more actually BELIEVING or being SINCERE about what you're saying to God. Praying as Jesus taught us with the "Our Father" is fine. I believe God honors someone saying that as much as he does someone saying an original prayer. But if you're just reciting it and there's no heart or thought behind it, what's the point?

I don't think the "Our Father" was ever intended to be a memorized prayer. The disciples asked Jesus to teach them to prayer and He said, prayer like this - not memorized these words and repeat them.

I use the Our Father as an "outline". I start Our Father, who art in Heaven - O my Father, you are faithful and true. You have prepared a place for me. Hallowed be thy name. Your name is to be praised. You are holy and just.... etc.

I like to think of prayer as conversation. If I came home and repeated the same conversation (prayer) to my husband, how does that encourage our relationship? "Hi Honey, how was your day. Mine was good. You look great. I love you. Talk to you later."

But in the end, it is the condition of our hearts that God looks at.

Jesus himself used formalized prayers. It says in Luke it was His habit to be in the synagogue every sabbath, and there were several formalized prayers used at that time, including an early version of the Kaddish, the Shema, the Alenu and the original 18 paragraphs of the Amidah (there are 19 since at least the 2nd century). In fact the Lord's Prayer (Our Father) is structured very close to the Kaddish and the Alenu.

Many, if not all, of the 150 Psalms are prayers - conversations with God- prayers that were sung and/or read many times over the centuries. So if there's anything wrong formalized prayers, the book of Psalms may need editing.

"Formula" prayers are better for corporate (as opposed to individual) prayers.

Would it be better for corporate because of the atmosphere, and that there are many, not just one praying? I don't know... A unison thing... just trying to help here...

God already knows what I'm going to say but that doesn't keep me from trying to get one over on Him and then say... "just kidding".

I figure if I can't tell Him what is on my heart, then I've got a problem.

what is a prayer coming from the head and not from the heart really doing?

A formalized prayer is better for corporate prayers as it brings focus. You do not have 100 people going off in 100 different directions, all are praying as one.

Take for instance the lengthy Al Chet prayer. It lists all kinds of sins and not every individual commits all these sins, but most if not all would have been committed by the greater world wide community. So the whole community says "We have sinned" and repent from all that.

For the sin which we have committed before You in business dealings.
And for the sin which we have committed before You by eating and drinking.

For the sin which we have committed before You by [taking or giving] interest and by usury.
And for the sin which we have committed before You by a haughty demeanor.

For the sin which we have committed before You by the prattle of our lips.
And for the sin which we have committed before You by a glance of the eye.

For the sin which we have committed before You with proud looks.
And for the sin which we have committed before You with impudence.

For all these, God of pardon, pardon us, forgive us, atone for us.

A small sample of a very lengthy prayer.

Of course as Messianics we add to that last line that forgiveness is based on Yeshua's death on the cross.

As to whether a prayer comes from the heart or head, that is the choice of the individual. Ah individual spontaneous prayer is just as likely to be "head" prayer as a more formal one is.

I use some Psalms for prayer on a daily basis. I also talk to the Lord from my heart. I love that we can do that, because no matter where we are or what's going on around us, He is there to talk too.
