Could anyone tell me about Gardenias (sp)? Are they something that can take summer heat or are they more of a house plant? I don't have a green thumb at all & I'm just trying to find something that would be easy for my to try.

I have one gardenia bush because I really love the flowers. I'm in Florida, though and it's really too hot for it. It's in a somewhat shaded corner and blooms about twice a year. I think it would be better with more shade.

From: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gardenia
Gardenias have a reputation for being difficult to grow. Because they originated in warm humid tropical areas, they demand high humidity to thrive. They flourish in acidic soils with good drainage. Potting soils developed especially for gardenias are available.

Unless you are in the deep south, I would not recommend Gardenias. Do you want a flowering bush or pretty flowers? If it is the later, you may want to consider Daylilies

Daylilies are relatively hardy, can handle both heat and dry and heat and humid--I had them in New Mexico and I have them in Mississippi.
