Hanukkah is celebrated by Jews sometime close to Christmas. One of my teachers is a sweet Jewish lady. As an appreciation for her kindness toward me, I would like to give her a token or gift for Hanukkah. When do Jews celebrate Hanukkah in December, which date in December? What gift idea would you suggest to give to her? Something cool that does not break my budget to show my appreciation to her. Thanks for any tips and hints!

A Hannukah Menorah (remember these are special nine branch menorahs, not the ones used for the Sabbath) A crystal Dreidel. A Harry & David Hannukah Basket or Hannukah Cookies.

Wow, I am blown away by the beauty of these gifts and at loss which one to choose. They are all beautiful. I especially love that blue colour which is the symbol of their Jewish culture. Thanks Kat!

Chanukkah, which runs for 8 days, starts on the 25th of a winter month - the month of Kislev. That varies from year to year when compared with our Roman calendar. Chanukkah means 'dedication" and commemorates the re-dedication of the temple after the Maccabean revolt. (160s bc) It is perhaps the only feast that is celebrated by Jews but is NOT found in the Jewish Bible (our OT), but is NOT celebrated by christians while it IS found in the Christian scriptures: Joh 10:22 At that time the Feast of the Dedication took place at Jerusalem; Joh 10:23 it was winter, and Jesus was walking in the temple in the portico of Solomon.

Thanks DaveW for this historical info, they are so invaluable! I admit many of them are quite new for me.

Latkes (potato pancakes) are GREAT!! They are the food of the season for Ashkenazic (eastern Europe) Jews. Also, most foods are fried, in memory of the oil that lasted 8 days. For Sephardic (Mediteranean) Jews, the food of the season is Sufganiyot, fried jelly-filled doughnuts. Other foods are dairy based, remembering that Judith Maccabee fed the Greek tyrant cheese and wine until he fell asleep and then killed him, freeing the Israelites from occupation.
