Hanukkah is celebrated by Jews sometime close to Christmas.

One of my teachers is a sweet Jewish lady. As an appreciation for her kindness toward me, I would like to give her a token or gift for Hanukkah.

When do Jews celebrate Hanukkah in December, which date in December?

What gift idea would you suggest to give to her? Something cool that does not break my budget to show my appreciation to her.

Thanks for any tips and hints!

Hanukkah 2008

A Hannukah Menorah (remember these are special nine branch menorahs, not the ones used for the Sabbath)

A crystal Dreidel.

A Harry & David Hannukah Basket or Hannukah Cookies.

Wow, I am blown away by the beauty of these gifts and at loss which one to choose. They are all beautiful. I especially love that blue colour which is the symbol of their Jewish culture.

Thanks Kat!

Chanukkah, which runs for 8 days, starts on the 25th of a winter month - the month of Kislev. That varies from year to year when compared with our Roman calendar. Chanukkah means 'dedication" and commemorates the re-dedication of the temple after the Maccabean revolt. (160s bc)

It is perhaps the only feast that is celebrated by Jews but is NOT found in the Jewish Bible (our OT), but is NOT celebrated by christians while it IS found in the Christian scriptures:

Joh 10:22 At that time the Feast of the Dedication took place at Jerusalem;
Joh 10:23 it was winter, and Jesus was walking in the temple in the portico of Solomon.

Cloak, the blue color means Emmanuel.

Dave, where in the NT is Hannukah found?

Funny how Christians celebrate Christmas when it's not in the scriptures. lol At least Hannukah is not pagan huh.

Thanks DaveW for this historical info, they are so invaluable! I admit many of them are quite new for me.

As a result, I am going to celebrate both Jewish and Christians Holidays/Feasts; since Jesus Himself celebrated Both of them!

Even though nothing is mentioned in the New Testament about celebrating Christ's birth, it is good for us Gentiles to do so.

However, the story of baby Jesus' birth is mentioned in the 1st 4 gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke and John). We can conclude that we can celebrate His birth since it's mentioned in the NT.

What do you expect the Bible to tell you: Oh by the way READERS...Go ahead and celebrate Jesus's birth and call it Christmas/ This is just too Funny!

This evening I met with my lovely Jewish teacher and gave her a beautiful Hanukkah gift and we embraced each other while wishing her a happy Hanukkah to her and her parents. Her boyfriend is Christian. I asked her what the national dish was for Hanukkah and she said latkes.

Latkes (potato pancakes) are GREAT!! They are the food of the season for Ashkenazic (eastern Europe) Jews. Also, most foods are fried, in memory of the oil that lasted 8 days.

For Sephardic (Mediteranean) Jews, the food of the season is Sufganiyot, fried jelly-filled doughnuts. Other foods are dairy based, remembering that Judith Maccabee fed the Greek tyrant cheese and wine until he fell asleep and then killed him, freeing the Israelites from occupation.

Thank you DaveW for another invaluable info. I would like to try to cook those Latkes; I believe they are fried with eggs sort of Spanish Omelet which I love so much.

Evidently my teacher is Ashkenaz Jew. (((DaveW))) Happy Hanukkah to you and your sweet lit kids in the picture!!!

Thanks Mrs. Above. I believe we should love one another in this way.

Those doughnuts are actually similar to those doughnuts we have in North America. If I could bake some batches I would have sent you some by X press post as Xmas gift. How about that?
