Mine did not have a cataract, but we did patching for quite some time due to another issue. You can buy child-sized disposable patches that work similar to a bandaid. We patched one eye daily for several weeks, then alternated eyes for a while. He was in preschool, and it never fazed him, although sometimes when he played really hard and sweated it seemed to irriate him a little. If he got hot & sweaty, we just let him take it off, and after he had cooled down & his face was dry, we'd put a fresh one on.

Hey ~ I'm here, I'm here!! Although I really don't have any advice since we still struggle with this!! Noah was born with Glaucoma... it is very tricky to treat and so is the vision aspect of it. He will be doing eye patches until around age 9. He is 17 months right now.
As a baby, it was easy...except that his skin was sensitive. Now he is older and he takes the patch off. We tried a cloth patch that go on the lense of his glasses, but he can take his glasses off, also. All I can say is, work up to the time that it needs to be on. I was also told that you can do it in shorter segments several times a day instead of all in one shot, also. And, depending on the age of your child... know that it is a struggle and try not to blame yourself if you don't get all the time in that you are suppose to. I am sort of waiting for Noah to get to an age where he can be rewarded for it. Right now it is a non-stop struggle and he doesn't get the time in he should. Consistency helps too.

Wow... I don't have any advice. Just wanted to say how amazed I am. Dh had a cataract on each eye before he was 30, and the doctors were amazed. Wow....

Thanks for the replies.
My baby is 11 months. The cataract removed from left eye on 6/18. She's doing really well. I went back to work yesterday and I was a little worried about the times I would patch. I was off with her and it was easier to have the patch on before she got up every morning. Now that I'm back to work I decided to just tell my mother in law, who keeps her during the day, to put it on at 3pm. I pick her up close to 6pm. I was wondering if it was hard to make sure your child kept it on for the full timeframe. Her doctor said to patch 5 hours a day. But you also have to count the time if they take a nap to make sure it's the full 5 hours. I use the patch thats like a bandaid.
One day last week basically as soon as I put the patch on just because part of it lifted from my daughters face my MIL asked if can she could take it off. This made me panic because it seems she will just take it off at will. This doesn't make sense to me.
Homegrownkids, now that I've read your post I do feel better. I do patch the full 5 hours because the tape is so sticky it causes redness and a rash on her skin. It usually goes away shortly though. I am breathing a sigh of relief now. Thanks you so much.

You doing much better than we are!!! Our baby learned to tear the patch off around 6 months old. It has been a struggle ever since. Our doctor wants us to do 3 hours a day, and if it stays on longer then let it. But, he said he knows it is hard to do with a young child and told me that even if it is 20 minutes a day it is better than nothing. For 9 months now they've been working with the Glaucoma instead of the vision. Next month he will see the Ophtalmologist for the first time in a long time and I bet he will tell us that he needs to be patched for a lot longer during the day.
I was going to tell you... they do give out cute little arm restraints to help train them to leave the patch alone. I just don't like them, I'm always afraid he is going to fall with the arm restraints on.

Do you use the bandaid patch? My baby started snatching the metal cover she had on after surgery off. She can't get the bandaid off unless it gets really wet if she cries or sweats. I can imagine your baby is a lot more active than mine. I hope we can keep up with the 5 hours by the time she's 17 months.
