Has anything caused you to change the way you pray?
Someone here mentioned that we pray either like a Cat or like a Dog.
(I think it was TMeeks who shared a web site www.prayertogo.com)
One way to pray is Self-Centered Prayers, and the other is Prayers that are Centered on God's Glory. (In the website, I took the Prayer Quiz.
It opened my eyes to the truth. I thought I prayed one way, but sadly found I prayed the other.)
This truth has really touched me, and I see Prayers in a whole new dimension! (How about you? Have your Prayers ever changed?)

These past 8 months or so have seen many changes in my walk with the Lord.
One of these changes is that I have learnt to use Scripture in prayer. Stormie Omaritian has some great books in which she uses Scripture in prayer and her books have been a tremendous help in helping me to realise the relevance in praying Scripture.

A cat tends to be independent and not dependant on someone unless they want something whereas a dog tends to want to please it's master/owner more than itself. Are we more like the cat concerning our prayers, e.g. we only pray to get our needs met or are we more like the dog who wants to please and love it's master?

My perception of God and Who He is, changed the way I pray.
Prayer is communication with God and it simply occurred to me that if I am communicating with God, what do I possibly have to say to Him? Am I going to inform Him? Surprise Him?
But, possibly there is much He has to say to me, and much I need to hear. So, I listen more.
And the more I listen, the more my own words are reduced to simply, "Thank You, Jesus."

As I've grown closer to God my prayers tend to be more conversational and honest, all the time (unceasingly) and with my eyes open. Although I'm a firm believer in traditional prayer I find my unconventional way of praying is 90 percent of my prayers.

In this context I always think of Daniel 9 where he prayed/fast/agonized about his and Israel's condition.
A Useless Thing
Ah, a novel idea! Of course it came from another source but can I appropriate it? The novelty is that prayer changes things. Prayer does not change things; we all know that but rarely admit it. It’s a sweet notion but prayer only changes our focus. Elisabeth Elliot said, "Sometimes obedience means the willingness to do the useless thing in order that God may do the great thing."
Our prayer is a “useless thing”.
Whoa! How does mouthing some words affect external circumstances never mind eternal ones? Probably I could save my breath and yearnings if not for the assurance in hope in the blood and victory of Jesus’ cross.
But obedience in a “useless thing”, a simple courtesy extended to martyrdom in His name will allow the eternal Jehovah to do the great thing. Not in ease or sympathy but in boldness and power; the power that raised the Messiah to resurrection life.
'All hail the power of Jesus' name!
Let angels prostrate fall;
bring forth the royal diadem,
and crown him Lord of all!

Yes.
I was saved in a charismatic church and now attend a baptist church and the way I pray isn't exactly...accepted.
I have confidence in the promises of God and don't believe in half hearted wishy washy prayers...if its your will...prayers.
Go before Him as sons.
Pray God's will.
Intercede for others.

I pray as if my life depends on it... and it does!
I had a specific prayer this week that God answered in my favor. I had faith that He would help me. I've spent more time praising Him than the time I spent praying for the thing.
Prayer is more important than anything that I think or do and a majority of my prayers center in praise because I know that I do not deserve any good thing that God has done in my life.
The difference between a joyous Christian and a defeated one is prayer.

Thank you for posting the website regarding prayer. I have never seen described as cats and dogs but it makes perfect sense to me.
ummhumm pssst. My dog is sitting in my lap. I am not sure who is in charge at this time.

My prayer life has had its peaks and valleys for sure.
I was convicted a few years ago that my prayers were nothing more than a grocery list of requests. I was treating God as though He were some celestial santa claus.
Then I moved into a time when I learned to pray through scripture, using verses as the basis for my prayer.
And finally, I read Praying Beyond The Sick List - totally awesome.

The Lord led me to pray the psalms many years ago and that has been a most wonderful way of prayer for me. (After His leading me in this, I discovered that 'many' have prayed this way for centuries.)
The psalms are a wonderful mix of very worshipful, God exalting thoughts as well as crying out to Him in our deepest need. But as I pray them I know that I am being heard, that they are His will because they are His word. And through it, He speaks it personally to me and I pray it personally back to Him. Usually I write these prayers in a prayer journal and I have years and years of these journals.
I let the Spirit lead as I pray. He knows the needs of those around me so as I pray different verses and thoughts, He lets me know who I am praying this for.
I usually pray one psalm each day. At times, I will spend longer on one psalm---praying just individual verses or sections rather than the whole psalm. But it is all led by Him.
Anyway, it has revolutionalized my prayer life. And I love knowing that others are praying the very same thoughts and prayers since it is God's word. The world is being encircled in prayer. His glory is covering the whole earth through these prayers. And we are hastening the day of Jesus' triumphant return. Amen!
