Have you ever written to a politician about something that affects your life or in response to comments they made about something? I'm not talking about major things here but more personal ones.

Do you ever expect a response or for them to actually be of any use, or do you just write to let off steam?

I wrote to one of my MP's a while back about a scheme they have to get people to exercise more by using the gym. The political party that introduced it raved about how good it was. I wrote because they claimed that they'd made it affordable. I was angry because they hadn't (not in all areas of the country anyhow!).

Didn't do much good, but I felt better!

Now is the time to write to your MP (Member of Parliament in the UK) or equivalent in the USA.

We may have a snap election in the UK and politicians are eager to "listen" to the voters.

Just received a letter from one of the candidates seeking my views. He'll get them !!!

I have written to politicians several times and I've made votes at vote.com. (When they have votes going on they will send your vote to your reps.) I don't know if they read any of that or if they care, but it sure made me feel better to do it!

I've sent email to one of my state's senators a couple of times--I may have written by snail-mail, too, I don't remember. I did get a reply back--more or less a generic "we've received your letter and will take it under consideration" type of things. Don't know if it really made a difference, but I at least let them know how I felt about the issues.

I wrote to George Bush Sr. when I was a kid, and I asked him to send my mom a late birthday card because everyone in the family had forgotten her birthday. And, he did. It was his stamp though, not a signature written in pen, so it was probably a white house employee. Still, it was very nice of whoever it was that did it.

It said,

"Dear Ernestina,
I'm sorry this card is late, but I wanted to wish you a happy birthday. I hope you have a better one next year.

Sincerely,
George Bush"

I've written to my MLA (provincial rep) and our Provincial Premier because of an issue with our fire department. (we're not allowed to carry an IED because we don't have the proper liability insurance because we not under a municipality)
And the minister at the time never replied. Well actually, he wrote back and said he would get back to me, which he never did. The critic on the other party wrote, and called me twice. He's now the minister of that department, and I just might write him again and see if he's still interested.

Christina, that's awesome!!

I used to be a big political letter writer...wrote one to Nixon that was not very flattering or friendly. Wrote a personal note to G. Ford suggesting he have his inner ear checked since he kept falling down - that particular letter got flagged for some reason by FBI, CIA, whoever ....

I've written to Carter and Reagan. Mr. Carter is the only one that wrote back and that was kinda cool.

I've written probably 20-30 letters over the years to our state congressmen with marginal responses. Mostly just thank yous for making us aware of XYZ.

So now I knight you all in here with the responsibility of writing those letters and making sure that these politicians do indeed, represent the people.

I haven't personally, but hubby has. Several times. And some issues have been changed (on a local and state level) because of letters from him and other like-minded individuals. So don't ever think your voice is completely ineffective. It's not.

In years past I've written several letters and e-mails to senators, representatives, mayors, town councils, and even the governor of our state. I've very rarely gotten replies from anyone.

Recently, however after writing the governor, state rep and a local senator about some issues, I have gotten some somewhat favorable responses. There is one of these people that attends a local church nearby, and ref's my ds's basketball and soccer leagues. He actually stopped me at a soccer game this past spring to let me know that he had received my letter and wanted some more information. We sat and talked for at least 20 minutes and he thanked me afterwards. He admitted that he hadn't thought about this issue in that way since all his children were grown and out of school already and he wasn't actually in the trenches of dealing with schools and budget cuts right at that very moment. I don't know what will ever become of it, but I was very happy that he took the time to listen and interact with me.

Oh and with the town council- I guess it wasn't really a letter as I just went to a meeting and spoke my mind about a problem that I was dealing with with stray dogs being dumped at the end of our driveway and county animal control not responding EVER, even when the animal posed a threat. I figured I wanted some back up from the town council when I went to the next level of contacting county officials. The town council and I drafted a letter that went to the county officials asking for equal treatment as the rest of the county and that just because we were a small rural community didn't mean we could be ignored. I don't know what ever came of that, as I'm still not getting service from county animal control, but it's not the town council's fault.

And if school superintendents count as political figures I can't tell you how many times I've e-mailed and talked to that man!

Blessings,

Garsy

Another time I wrote to George Bush Sr. was during the Gulf War. My aunt had gotten me this "feelings" book about the war geared toward small school-aged children. It had me draw pictures of how I felt about the war and had me write my feelings. It also had a little section that we could send to George Bush that had partial sentences that I finished by filling in the blank. I'll never forget the one line, "Mr. President can you please 'make Sadam Hoosain be a Catholic before he gets killed so he won't go to Hell.'" That's how I spelled it and everything. I think I was 6 years old.

I don't think I got anything back.

I've written several letters in the past covering a number of issues, including issues that concern me on my job. Usually, I get some sort of response back... from the local reps, I'll actually get a personalized response about a week or two later.

I think I have, but it's been a long time.

When I was in the 7th grade, our choir composed and recorded a song and sent it to Reagan. It was about the N-reactor shutdown and how it would affect our families. At the time, everyone thought this would become a ghost town. While I still disagree with disbanding nuclear energy, I have a better understanding of the inherent problems with the4 reactor (was not a feeder reactor), and also, this area has tripled in size because now they need workers to clean up the messes made by the manhattan project and related nuclear projects.

What astounds me about this is that I was in the 10th grade at the time, taking geography for the second time (not my fault!) and there were several 9th graders in our class who had no CLUE what the war was about. Seriously, one of them raised her hand and said, 'What did Mr. Hussein do to make everyone so angry?' and we spent at least one hour going over the situation (so kudos to Mr. MacDonald for taking the time from his regular lesson plan to enlighten these poor kids whose parents clearly had not been doing their job!). Anyway, you were a precocious 6 yo, that's for sure, lol.

No, but I'm going to as soon as our lawsuit for Brian's accident is done. The lawyers don't want us to do anything before then.

I've written Sinator Mary Landrieu letting her know I didn't appreciate how she blamed the President for Katrina. I wrote my local representatives urging them to impeach Gov. BlanK0 for her criminal stupidity.

That's what I asked her. I told her she should have used her position to tell her constituents to get the heck out of the way of a Cat 5 storm. She didn't respond to my correspondence.

I've written my governor and Pres Bush many times.
I did get a "personal letter" back from Governor Sebelius.
(She told me she couldn't help me but directed me to a certain department that may.)
