From the Newsweek article. What do you think of this? Do you agree? Or is the committee too Euro-centric?

I read a blurb about this yesterday in Time. I think the committee is too snobby, and seeking to preserved a literary tradition that hasn't existed for decades. Part of the problem is that the secretary of that committee is permanent.

While I don't agree with this guy, the comment that American literature doesn't translate got me thinking. There have been many American books that don't "translate" for me. In fact American literature I probably read the least of all(which is still a fair amount.) However, I'm sure that you all in turn could say that Canadian literature doesn't translate for you. There is something uniquely Canadian in much of our literature, that while it may still be a good book for you, you might not quite understand what makes it truly Canadian. You may wonder why the book stands out so much. It doesn't mean that it is not good writing, or that Canadians are insular, our writing just reflects our culture, and obviously we want our literature to reflect our culture. Oh well, the Nobel prize for literature has always seemed elitist to me.

The Nobel prizes are always determined based more on politics than on merit. The awards are virtually worthless as a mark of true distinction. (But I understand they still come with a nice check)

Okay, that guy has some issues. I think he's wrong, it appears to me he's letting his own biases about the U.S. color his view about what constitutes "great" literature. Isn't that subjective anyways? Oh well, I agree the Nobel prize seems elitist and political.
