We all want to obey our Lord. However, how do we prevent our obedience from becoming an unhealthy obsession. I mean, I feel such a weight on my shoulders to do what is right. Reading my Bible, praying, giving, serving, keeping myself pure, etc. I am not saying that doing these things are burdensome or that I do not want to do them, but, often times, I feel so drained trying to do what is right..I feel that perfectionism is coming on. What do you think? C

Ritual and religion, which is basically bondage are not part of the gospel. Now as servants or slaves we may try to please our master by doing the things that we think he wants but as sons we are not bound by such worries for we are loved for our own sake and not by the things we can do. Now even if we love reading scripture and serving, we never grow tired of it unless we do such things to please others and not ourselves. Scripture says that God will give us the desires of our hearts. Now who of us would grow tired of doing that which we desire to do? Nevertheless, we have Christ's example of the need to take a break from even doing the things we love to gain perspective on what we are doing. Taking a step back to see the bigger picture after working so long on the detail as it were. In all this, it is more important to be a child of God rather than to do the things expected of the children. In the end, Christ was God not by having done the things He did for He was God before did anything.

What do you think? C Obedience to God should be an obsession; Christ said; (Luk 6:46) And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say? If one wants to call Jesus Lord; then obedience is a must, not an option. Thanks RC

When you do feel like you're being focused more on the acts themselves than on the God, take some time to stop and think and get refocused, even if it may mean blowing bubbles in the church parking lot. It becomes unhealthy when you're focused more on the service than on the God you serve.

Slushie is right. When praying, reading the Bible etc becomes more of a duty rather than a natural act of worship then you might as well stop. I sometimes say to God that I don't feel like praying. I just want to sit there and listen ... at the birds singing in the bushes in my garden, at the wind blowing through the trees as they move backwards and forwards with their leaves rustling ... It's at times like these that, sometimes, I hear God speaking.
