Hi all! It's been a VERY long time since I was last here.

Today I went for my first prenatal visit with my midwife (I went for a physical with my doctor about a month ago.) My dh and I are 13 weeks pregnant with our first. We are very excited, although nervous as he is looking for permanent work (he's a supply teacher) and we're trying to buy our first house. Anyhow... I went for my visit. Everything was going fine until they looked for my baby's heartbeat. She used a doppler monitor. The student midwife and midwife tried for about 5-10 minutes (I'm not sure how long, but it seemed like a long time) but they couldn't find a heartbeat. She didn't seem overly worried but ordered an ultrasound for me. I am able to get the ultrasound on Friday. I know I shouldn't worry. But I can't help it. The doctor tried at 10 weeks and they didn't find it then either (I know that's early) but I thought for sure they could find it at 13 weeks. I am a bit overweight and carry most of my weight around my midsection. Could this effect it? I know that I should wait patiently for Friday, but I can't help wondering if everything is ok. Does anybody have a positive story of the same thing happening to them?

Weight can affect it, as well as the baby's position, and the placenta's position, and the possibility of your dates being a little off.

Head on over to the pregnancy support thread in Womens Only-Personal Issues for more support.

If it helps my midwife couldn't find my current baby's heartbeat at 20 weeks. And that is rare. She tried for 15 minutes. But I knew he was ok, he was moving and shaking around in there, trying to get away from the doppler. He doesn't like that thing. So she did an u/s anyway, and there he was. His back was towards my back and he was head down, making it really hard to find. I wouldn't worry about it. I know, easier said than done.

Some practices won't even attempt dopplers until 20 weeks because of their ineffectiveness.
Please try not to worry. I am sure your baby is fine.

When I was 11 or 12 weeks, the nurse couldn't find the heartbeat. Thankfully they had an ultrasound right there and we could see that the baby was fine. I'm also overweight and wondered if that had something to do with it. I'm praying for you...it must be hard to wait until Friday.

My husband and I are also expecting our first child (and I'm a teacher, too) and he has been looking for a job since the first of May with no prospects whatsoever. It's hard during a time that you're already anxious/worried/nervous/ect. I hope your husband finds permanent work soon

When I went in for my 12 week appointment, my doctor probably told me a dozen times before she used the doppler not to worry if we couldn't hear anything. I had just had a sonogram 30 minutes earlier, so we knew the baby was fine, but she was still doubtful about whether we'd be able to hear the heartbeat via doppler at only 12 weeks pregnant.

Worrying is normal, but not healthy for you or the baby. Hang in there... it's almost Friday. I hope everything turns out wonderfully and this might be great because you get to have a sonogram that hadn't previously been scheduled, so you'll get to see your baby earlier than you might otherwise have been able to

Thanks all! Today has been much better. I didn't dwell on it so much. I'm just trying to trust God about everything. We had a fun day looking at houses. One definite potential! Who knows! I'll let you know tomorrow evening how the ultrasound went. Sorry that I didn't post this in the pregnancy thread. It's been so long since I was on here I didn't even think to look for one!

I know exactly how you are feeling. Last year my dh volunteered in a school for all of September. The principal helped get him on the board supply list. There was a mat-leave opening up at the school he was volunteering so he got that position, but as of June he's been unemployed. There's talk of a teacher's strike in September which would leave him without even supplying... God is good, but I really wish He'd show me a flashing neon sign explaning what He's up to!

I went in a few weeks ago (at about 12 weeks) and they couldn't find the hearbeat either... babies are really, really tiny at 13 weeks (about 3 inches long), and they can "hide". Fortunately they had an ultrasound at the office and just took me in there to check... had a little trouble finding the baby then too, because he/she was "hiding" a lot lower than the nurse expected. So, I would imagine that your baby is just "hiding" as well. Enjoy the ultrasound!
