Hi all. I'm not very computer savvy . Would someone please tell me how to convert a document to text-only using windows XP. Searching on-line I read that I am supposed to 1. open the document 2. click file and select "save as" 3. re-name the file 4. select "text only" or "plain-text" from the pull-down menu 5. save

I don't see "text-only" or "plain-text" as options on the pull down menu. What am I missing here?(I'm trying to convert a resume so that I can e-mail it for the first time .

Thanks for your help!

Missgiggles, I'm such a nut case. I had to realize that the document has been typed in wordperfect. what would you suggest I do? I notice that most employers want the e-resume to be a Word document. I don't believe I have microsoft word but I have notepad.

Thanks

I looked in word perfect and it should be the same as for word. Make sure you are choosing the drop down arrow and scrolling through all the choices.

or copy and paste it into notepad and save as text, but you may have to readjust the formatting.

Instead of the words "text only," look for the .txt file extension. That will save it as a .txt file that pretty much any word processor this side of Mars will be able to open.

Do keep in mind Miss Giggles' warning, however: you will lose pretty much any formatting, so you might need to reformat it.

Unless you have been specifically requested to submit a .txt file, you also might want to try saving it as Rich Text Format (.rtf), which does retain the formatting, but also can be opened by pretty much any word processor around.

I'd suggest RTF (rich text format) or PDF (Portable Document Format) so that you can preserve formatting, but still have it read by a wide variety of software.

I've noticed a lot of companies asking for plain text files of late. I just made a reformatted text version of my resume and that way I have one handy.
