I have a mirror hanging in our dining room that I cannot clean without it looking streaky when the sun shines on it. I’ve tried using Windex & paper towels and also newspaper to try to get the streaks out. Is there something better than what I’m trying?

I've been using white vinegar and paper towels to apply and a clean cloth to dry for years. White vinegar works fine and is cheap.

I use Norwex products, they are microfiber clothes that use only water. There is a glass and mirror buffing cloth, and it works AMAZING!!

Link to polishing cloth

Do you put straight vinegar on a paper towel to clean? If not, what is the ratio of vinegar to water?

Firefightermama, those polishing cloths seem like a great idea. It doesn't look like you can buy those in a store. I wonder if there is something similar in stores to buy?

Straight vinegar onto the towel without water. I have a small bottle of generic white vinegar that I use just for cleaning mirrors.

Thanks! I'll give it a try and see how it works.

Yeah, I think right now they just sell at parties (like tupperware, pampered chef, etc) Maybe there would be some on ebay? I don't know!
I think you might be able to order straight from one of the reps. I will see what I can find out!

They make microfiber cloths for cleaning eyeglasses and computer screens. Seems like you could find that sort of thing on a larger scale, like for mirrors.

Well, I must be doing something wrong. I just tried the vinegar thing and I still get streaks and it looks "smudgy" in areas. I put the vinegar on the clean paper towel and wiped the mirror. Then I took a dry paper towel rub off the vinegar. What could be wrong?? Maybe I don't have a normal mirror!

I don't know what to say. I've been using white vinegar to clean the mirrors in our bathrooms for years and they look great.

Maybe it has some type of build up on it. I may have to really wash it, and then try the vinegar. My bathroom mirrors clean up ok. It's just this mirror in our dining room

When I worked in food service we used coffee filters to clean windows/mirrors

Newspaper is supposed to work well, too. And the clean, dry cloth helps to "buff" the mirror so that the streaks disappear. But I use straight vinegar and a paper towl on my glass surfaces too and don't have too much of a problem (though I'm usually in a rush and don't notice/care if they streak anyway).

Something that crossed my mind is that you might be seeing the result of tiny scratching from using paper. It's the same reason that cleaning eyeglasses with paper is a bad practice.

Newspaper is much better than paper towels. Leaves no lint and a great way to recycle if you still get the printed paper.
