I've got a stretch in my backyard that is overgrown with weeds! I don't mind the heat and dirt - don't like it but I can survive it. I can't handle bugs and snakes, though . . . which is why my yard looks like it does. I was just out there trying to pull weeks and a giant green beetle of some sort landed on my head - that's when I call it quits. It's my LEAST favorite thing in the world to do!!
I've got some teenagers from church who need to earn money for camp who are willing to come do it. I'm worried that they don't really know what they're in for. How much would you pay two or three teenaged guys to come clear out a section about 35' long?

I don't know. It depends on how good they are at what they do.
You could always start low and give them extra if they do a really good job.
Problem with many weeds is that unless every single piece of the root is out, they will come back pretty quickly.
I'm putting down a porous ground cover fabric and planting through it. It's kept the weeds down really well on the area that I did last year.

Maybe $10/hour each, provided they worked and weren't bums.
I'm pulling that number out of the air, but I think that's reasonable for our area. Minimum wage here is something like $8.00/hr.

If it were only one person and if I were feeling generous--$30-35. It kinda depends upon what the going rate is in your area. You have to figure that it is determined by what the competition will take for the job. Figure if you're doing it to help the youth group (charitably) or if you're giving it to the guys for video game money.
In an urban setting, you could get some professional seasonal landscaping guys to do it for $25, if it meant repeat business as a regular customer. Maybe $40, if it is a one time deal and if it's a lot of headache.
I just gave a friend of mine $30 to do my lawn once while I was on vacation. The grass was not all that long and he did the edging too. I could have found someone to do it for $20, maybe. But again, they would want to come back for the rest of the summer.

Do ya think? I was thinking more like $100+! I wouldn't do it for that!! Yardwork is miserable.

In cities like Dallas, there are lots of Mexican landscaping businesses. Those guys have it down to a science and make money on volume. They aren't slow and doing it at their pace would exhaust me.

Gee, maybe not any more--what with gas prices and all. I don't know what the going rate is right now. Last time I checked, you could get a large lawn done (1/4 acre, last season) for $25. But they want regular customers. If they can't get you as a regular customer, a lot of them will turn you down. And they want that business every week (4 times a month). If you try to get them only once or twice a month, you might never hear from them again.
But if these are kids and don't have to make a living on it (the friend I spoke of had a regular full-time job already), they won't require as much. And it depends on if they are maintaining their own equipment.
Eighteen inch high weeds can tear up a good weed eater. Maybe your point is well taken.

I wouldn't pay by the hour. I would let them see the job and agree on a flat rate.
