Howard Dean Accidentally Calls the Republican Party the "White" Party

August 16, 2008 12:20 PM

In an interview with National Public Radio on Friday, Howard Dean, the chairman of the Democratic National Committee, referred to the Republican Party as the white party, seemingly accidental.

"If you look at folks of color, even women, they're more successful in the Democratic Party than they are in the white, uh, excuse me, in the Republican Party," Dean said, chuckling, "because we just give more opportunity to folks who are hard-working people who are immigrants and come from members of minority groups."

Howard Dean Accidentally Calls the Republican Party the "White" Party

And I thought it was the Republicans who always brought race into this

First (and most important), Howard Dean is an idiot. He should recall when his former attempt at humor lost him the democratic nomination.

That being said, one would have to be pretty naive to think that the Republican party is NOT mostly white. While inroads have been made to make the Republican party more diverse and inclusive, as a former state delegate who's attended Republican conventions, I know for a fact that Dean's statement is true.

Yes, the democratic party is definitely the party of diversity. That's why democrats were the first to appoint a black man (formerly the democratic appointed Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff) and a black woman back to back as Secretaries of State - arguably the second most important position in the free world - as well as the second black Supreme Court Justice in history. Meanwhile, the GOP's top black guy made a name for himself as a.... community organizer.

But seriously folks...

It's always been a mystery to me why there are probably more black hockey fans than black republicans. In general, the GOP usually gets around 12-15% of the black vote if they're lucky, in ANY election. I think I remember reading where Huckabee got something like 40% in the Arkansas gubernatorial race and that was considered amazing - so they can do better.

It was admirable that McCain spoke to the NAACP and National Urban League, something folks like Bob Dole eschewed. But in order for the GOP to make inroads into obtaining a bigger share of the black vote, they have to truly want to, and I'm not sure they do. After all, we're only about 12 percent of the population - we're not even the top minority anymore - and they've won without the black vote in the past. Secondly, they stand a chance of losing part of their base by reaching out too much - i.e., softening their stands on Affirmative Action.

Also, I believe there are a number of republicans who assume the reason blacks vote overwhelmingly democrat is because we're lazy and want handouts. Therefore, some are willing to accept that the "values" the GOP stands for (which most black folks obviously don't share) aren't worth compromising for the sake of gaining a few more votes. Of course this perception of blacks is ludacrous, especially with the growing black middle AND upper class, but I've heard it cited many times by posters on CW, in right-wing blogs and commentaries, and even by black activists themselves, such as Sean Hannity regular, Rev. Jesse Lee Peterson.

Also, the republicans aren't as cool as the democrats. Everybody knows that.

It has become cultural and that's more difficult to overcome than intellectual committments because they aren't swayed easily to logic.

My theory is that it goes back to LBJ. It's odd because the era was marked by riots and fierceful objection to racial equality by Democrats. Faubus, Wallace, Gore, etc. They filibustered the equal rights act, tried to block school desegregation and routinely referred to blacks with the N word, a word LBJ used. The committment goes to his social programs.

Although there are more poor whites than blacks, blacks have a higher percentage of poor people. Democrats have successfully labeled opposition to government welfare out programs as racially motivated. Even slowing growth of these programs will get you labeled anti-black.
