I have to admit I find it amusing that this headline on Drudge appears right above the picture of Pelosi announcing that she is "trying to save the planet".

Considering that God seems to be gunning for California, she might want to start with calling on the people she represents to repent.

Unlikely scenario that.

Update: Caltech is now downgrading it to 5.4. Thank god for those in USGS because they keep our minds at ease when they explain why the earth is moving here. Oh, and btw, this is not the so-called bigone..

Jhud, not only he is gunning for California, he is gunning for all the nation--have you ever thought of that?

Certainly - I consider California a warning to all of us. A shot across the bow as it were.

What do you mean? That the quake was a divine incident?

Dude,

Californians has been fried, dried, drowned, and forced to live under a dictatorship. They have been cast into darkness, and starved.

If they want to chalk all that up to 'natural occurences', they are free to do so, but I think I would be gathering up my first born and heading for the border.

Well, the state's politics aside, Cali quakes and wildfires are no less frequent than tornadoes in Oklahoma, or volcanic eruptions in Hawaii.

As for California rolling blackouts, that's more a symptom of a badly outdated power grid in the middle of the state, and a failure (some might say on purpose; e.g. Enron) to maintain it versus an expanding population.

Nothing supernatural there.

Just out of curiousity, if California were being punished, how would it look different?

I don't know. But I also don't believe in the notion of divinely-inflicted natural disasters.

Also, for the record: today's quake was a 5.4, not 5.8.

Really? I suppose it depends on one's view of God. As a Christian I obviously don't think God is simply forgetting there is a fault line in CA and letting it slip. On the other hand I am generally not want to call every event in a fallen world a 'message' to do X, Y or Z.

It always seemed the best bet was to follow what I have come to call the 'Siloam Tower' principle ; that being when one contemplates the disasters that have befallen other sinners, one should always consider repentance as an option, both for oneself and others.

It would just seem at this juncture that Californians have more opportunity to consider that than the rest of us.

Well, under plate tectonics, faults and continental plates are always building up stresses between one another and then slipping - thus, the quake-prone "Ring of Fire" in the Pacific basin on which California borders.

Really? I find that sad because the Bible says that God caused a flood that covered the whole earth (Genesis 6:17), and that he has caused the ground to open up and swallow people (Numbers 16:31-32), and He caused a drought (1 kings 17:1). God has control over our whole world.

I hope to hear from all our forum members in CA soon to see if they are all ok. 5.4 sounds pretty bad.

I don't think the fact that something has a natural cause eliminates the fact that it has Provedential purpose, particularly as the existence of plates, people (and of course the universe in which they exist) ultimately find their source in God - of course, again, my Christian beliefs compel such an understanding.

It would look like Alabama.

Well maybe He's just taking His hand off of us a little bit. That might account for it.

As I said in another thread I took a little ride in my office chair when it hit. I am about 90 miles from the epicenter. The first reports did indeed state it was a 5.8 but then reduced it to a 5.4. However, when one hits you don't stop to analyze the size...you just pray that God stops it before it gets any bigger...oh, that's right, you don't think He has anything to do with it, sorry!

My daughter and her Dad were in his store in L.A. (20 miles from the epicenter) and he said his entire building made a loud crack and the stone floor shook and rattled. 5.4 is nothing to shake a stick at.

I guess you've forgotten about Moses and the Hebrews in Egypt and during the Exodus. Not to mention Noah and the flood.

With due respect, I believe these incidents never occurred, or are based on natural incidents which were interpreted as having supernatural origin at the time.

So God is a liar or He doesn't allow what happens in this life? Jesus spoke of Noah as He did real men. Jesus also recounted portions of the Exodus story as if it were real. Just checked in Bible Study Tools.

The fingerprints of His control are in the timing. He is the God of nature. Nature responds to Jesus' command.

Well, since I was there when the shake, rattle 'n rolling was going on, all I can say is that I was praying to God when this will be over--and that's even more the case come the latter few seconds of the quake! ...and I've already lived through the Northridge Quake back in high school--which is fractionally worse!*

*something like 6.9-7.0 on the Richter scale!

I've been in a 5.6 before, and it's no fun. I hope that everyone that experienced it is doing ok, and had no bad damage.

The providential purpose is to reshape the earth. God's act of creation is ongoing. Saying that the earthquake is "divine retribution" is ludicrous and based more on ancient superstition and anthropomorphism (the gods must be mad). Or do you claim to know the "mind of God" at the time of the earthquake.

The Bible belt has had a slew of natuaral disasters with more serious consequences (more deaths, more damage). Should the rest of us feel they are hypocritical sinners feeling God's wrath? Of course there is always your bias for all things Californian......

Come on Jack, such comments are unbecoming of an intelligent man such as yourself!

My house was 7 miles from the epicenter and for me, a native Californian, it was rated a medium yawner!

Well, I didn't base it merely on a single earthquake - I based it on ongoing fires, droughts, mudslides, food, water, and energy shortages, and having to be ruled by a Terminator. It maybe that these plagues are simply life as usual in CA, but from an outsider, it appears Someone is trying to get your attention - and I just wonder at what point one offers up repentance as possible option. It wouldn't seem that it would hurt at this point.

The other thing I find interesting from a purely theological perspective is viewing these events in light of the claim I often hear from secular folks that the plagues and punishments of the OT were unfair and unnecessarily cruel.

Considering the degree to which Californians will shrug off a series of disasters as being unconnected to their own behaviors and choices, one begins to understand why such severity is a necessary response to human folly.
