Is Anything That Is Mood-Altering Sin? Now the more obvious stuff is: taking drugs, drinking too much alcohol, etc. But what about posting on the net? Or drinking coffee? Or even praising the Lord? This can alter the mood, can this be sin too? Inquiring minds want to know!

Laughter
Smiles when someone first spots you approaching
Chocolate
Christmas smells, music, sounds, decorations
The sound of a child's giggle
Rainbows
Butterflies
Song birds
A gentle rain
Starry nights
First Fireflies of the year
Love letters
A dandelion bouquet in the dirty hand of a child
Baby's first sounds, smile, giggle, coo
The smell of Lilacs, Lavendar, cookies in the oven, pumpkin pie, apple pie, a child's freshly shampooed hair, smelly little boys, warm puppies, rain, the ocean.........

All these things and more can alter MY mood and none are sinful.

Altering one's mood from mundane to ecstasy(as in worship or enjoyment)is a higher plain mood change. (Thanx dianetavegia.) Now, mundane to depression is, probably, what we mean as Mood-Altering 'Sin'. There's many reasons for that alteration chiefly a lack allowing oneself to be encouraged.

I think the question is: Why is the person altering their mood? To feel better about themselves, to escape from reality. What is the motive?

I would then say no it is not sin. Sometimes our moods need to be improved and whatever legal means are used to do that, so much the better.

I'm curious as to where the notion of mood-alteration being sinful came from. Could you please share, humbleinspirit? : )

I heard about in regards to addiction and they mentioned the term mood altering, however there are plenty of things that can be mood altering, so I was just wondering if it all qualified as a sin or not?

Well, I'll ignore the addiction question for the moment, since that's something for another thread...
But I would agree with the above posts. Just because something altars your mood does not make it sinful. That idea is completely alien to Scripture. Our moods are in a constant state of alteration - albeit usually not dramatically - due to various influences, both internal and external. If everything that changed our moods were sinful, then, well, the only things that would not be sinful would be... I suppose anything we never came in contact with.
All that to say - no, I don't think mood-alteration is sinful in and of itself.

Ya can't find happiness or joy in the bottom of a liquor bottle....or cup of coffee....or a bowl of ice cream....or the kisses of your spouse.....

IF any of these exclude God. If your joy only comes from the carnal, you will get carnal results. You will have high blood pressure or sugar or obesity or get lost in lust.

Anything in your life before God is an idol....or to put it another way...when you finish that bottle of beer, is God looking at you from the bottom of the bottle?

If the circumstances of your life make you happy, you will never be happy for very long.

Any mind altering device cannot override your relationship with God or be primary to it.

Excuse me, WRB, is this an honest answer or some kind of facetious riddle? I will be happy to post scores of Scripture to refute it, if you wish!

Right on target, utilityfielder! The definition of sin must always return to the basic issue of motive, intent, and purpose. If our worship of the Lord is not "mind-altering", then I would say it's pretty ineffective and probably unpleasing to God. On the other hand, if we're relying on chemicals, relationships, and material things to fulfill us, then these are idols as SonInMe1 stated in #15.

I believe that was sarcasm based on the sometimes prevelant attitudes in certain threads around here. At least that was the way I took it.

(Sorry if you didn't want me answering for you, WhiteRoseBlessings.)

Since many seekers and new Believers frequent these discussion forums, I feel it's "necessary" to share sound doctrine. The correct definition of "sin" is very important to a proper understanding of salvation. It is neither spiritually healthy to minimize the awareness of sin nor to exaggerate its influence in one's Christian walk. I believe a statement such as "absolutely everything is sinful" may lead to both unhealthy outcomes. I hope that someone with >24K posts on a Christian Forum would share my belief. Do you?

I believe that Sharon-Marie was talking in jest.

Can we for the sake of the argument stick to the topic at hand? I really do not want to turn this discussion into whether everything is inherently sinful or not?

Instead, I really want to know solely on the "mood altering being a sin" instead.

Then please tell us your definition of "sin", humbleinspirit, since that really defines the topic at hand!

Sin is anything that falls short of missing God's mark.

LOL - Abiyah . . . His photo was plastered everywhere yesterday; among several posters. He and his wife were returning home from a trip and some of us were throwing him an online welcome home party.
