I only got a snippet of this, so I am wondering why some of the areas in Mississippi are demanding that the small homes build for Mississippians after Katrina to be torn down. Apparently some of the people love those homes and want them. What is the story behind the demand for their removal?

What was the source for the story? If they were built by the same folks who did the repair work after Katrina I wouldn't be surprised. The work on my Dad's house had to be redone. Shoddiest work we ever saw and the highest prices too. They used wire instead of nails. The boards wouldn't stay on.

I do not know for sure, but I think it has something to do with the houses not meeting the local building codes. Thsnks RC

Sorry -- big weekend. I will find out the source, if at all possible. I did see a running blurb on TV tonight that some of the "homes" are emitting poisonous gasses. Again, just a blurb. But houses held together by wire? That is ridiculous. Yeah, "contractors."

There were issues with people living in govt-provided motor homes/camper trailers - the wood used to construct these trailers is treated with formaldehyde, which releases noxious fumes. If you're only staying in the trailer for a week or two at a time, as their intended, it apparently is not an issue. But if you're living in it for months, then you have problems. -Dan.

I agree with Dan. I live in Miss. and after reading this thread I decided to look into it. No one I spoke to had heard of anyone having to move out of anything other than the FEMA trailors that contain high levels formaldehyde (glad you spelled it for me Dan)

I haven't had a chance to get back to this yet -- I'm on break at work. But one of the things I recall being said by the mayor of the city where they want the small homes torn down was that the homes were too small and did not fit his preferred image of that city, said, in my opinion, with a real hoity-toity attitude. He said that the homes were going to be demolished on a particular very near date -- like June(?). I was real surprised at his apparent attitude in the face of people needing these homes. They interviewed a couple home owners in the story, and they said they had no place to go, if he follows through.
