I know that in some countries and cultures, that there are some outdated beliefs that are still held to even in today's modern world where people are supposedly smarter. This story shows the consequences that can result when some of these beliefs are acted upon: Kenyan Witch Killings

I have heard of this sort of thing before. I remember seeing an show on Discovery Channel that reminds me of this. I can't quite remember what the show was but there were two men who had gone to live with tribal peoples of West Papau. During the episode, one of the men fell sick. The other then explained that it would be a very dangerous situation of any of the tribe caught the same illness because this particular tribe of people believed that if someone was sick, it was because another in the tribe was practicing witchcraft against them. Whoever then that was accused of witchcraft was hunted down and killed. One tribal member told the story of how his brother had been taken and killed just for this reason. It was a very sad moment on the show because you cold see the man really did love his brother and still grieved over him.

quote:
"These are vendettas. It is not that people really bewitched somebody," he says, adding he believes that witch hunts are really about people expressing hatred and coming up with an excuse to hurt someone. Seriously. A lot of people in the world still hold to these beliefs, a lot more than we think. My husband is from the Caribbean. There are a lot of people there who still believe in things like witch doctors, curses and ghosts. I make fun of Dh because he has a spot on his eye, and in his country, people believe that means he can see ghosts. And this is in a Christian country. There are a lot of people in the church who still believe this stuff as well.

This is very sad, but quote frankly the least of Kenya's problems, which the press routinely ignores.
