As noted, however, in the "New Catholic Encyclopedia" (1968), an icon is "an indispensable part of Orthodox worship. Its veneration has been proclaimed by the dogma of the ecumenical Council of Nicaea (787)." For Eastern Orthodoxy, Christianity is "the revelation not only of the Word of God, but also of the Image of God. ... Accordingly the liturgical tradition of the Orthodox Church connects the icon with the earthly life of Christ, with His image, 'made without hands' (acheiropoetos). The image 'made without hands' is above all Christ Himself, the Incarnate Word, revealed 'in the temple of His body' (John 2: 21). His icon is an authentic testimony of His Incarnation. It is not an image of God made according to human notions, but the very face of the Son of God made man, the image of the God-Man. The seventh ecumenical council puts the icon on the same level as the Holy Scriptures, seeing in it an expression of Revelation on a par with them. ... The icon is theology in visible form." http://religionandspirituality.com/christianity/view.php?StoryID=20071121-043428-4077r Does this bother you?
