Do you let your finger nails grow long? I think I have noticed time and time again that while while some women paint their nails, most of them do not have them grow long at all. Just wondering.

My nails rarely get past the tips of my fingers. And I haven't painted my nails in years. Haha!

They're not chewed to the nib, but they're not excessive. Long enough to paint, but short enough to type easily with.

I could see how long finger nails could be a challenge to type with, and yet isn't that how most women did that in the olden days?

The 1930's or so, in the days before computer keyboards.

I still don't understand what you're saying. Yes, women - and men, have always had fingernails, and have had to type with these fingers, and the accompanying nails. quote:

In all my years of studying women's history, and the history of clothing/fashion, that's a new one. If I had to take an educated guess, I'd say it was the opposite, as the general day-to-day life of a woman in the first half of the last century (ie, 1900-1960s) was more labor-intensive - and I'm speaking of the middle-upper class. I'm rather certain "Women" used to have much shorter fingernails, because longer ones just weren't practical.

I'm pretty sure that impractically long fingernails were not fashionable until at least the 80's - 90's.

I was noticing at many of the local nail salons, they offer a variety of lengths and have named them. Sporty length Active length - which is what most women have apparantly Long length Elongated length - those really long ones with all the jewels stuck on them

Where I worked for 10 years required the wearing of fake nails. But, I had worn them for years before that - and they were about 1/2 inch long (beyond the tip of my finger). I absolutely LOVED them!!!!! The job made me cut them down. And for years after the job, I still wore them (since I could do them myself). Fast forward to 2004 and I was flat on my back for 6 weeks with a pinched nerve in my back. I stopped doing EVERYTHING because it hurt too badly. My natural nails started growing and with the prednisone I took, they because very healthy. Since then I've just let them grow naturally and love them more now than I ever did before! Sure, there are moments when I miss the nice LONG nails, but then I realize just how impractical they are and just how "high maintenance" it makes me appear (when in reality, I am not because I do them myself). So, long story short - I've had them both, and I'll take the short nails now any day - they're still considered long by most standards because my nail bed is very long. I only use strenthener on them now. My toes are the only ones that get color - it's a must in FL.

I don't usually have them very long. Right now they're about an 1/8 of an inch and it's about how I normally have them.

I do not like mine too much past my fingertips. Most fingernails only last 3 months before they start to break, chip,etc.. I tried acrylics, but at first found them awkward as I use my hands a lot. I will probably get them for the summer, they make my hands look very nice. On the other hand, growing up I was more tomboyish and my older sister use to grow these *weapons* on her fingertips, and I mean these things were long. However me, being the tomboy, showed her how unhealthy they were when we got into it and I tore them off her fingers. Oh in case your wondering, when they do break like that, they break below the intended line. (Yes I was a mean spirited child.) CRH

(If someone else does, that's totally fine.) I let my nails get to medium length. They're not excessively long, but they aren't nubs. I leave them natural, but I shine them (not polish, but shine). My toenails are the same way. :) I think they're quite lovely.

(1/8 inch or around 5 mm) But they're starting to split and break, so I'll trim them to about 2 or 3 mm away. I don't often paint my fingernails. In spring and summer I usually keep my toenails painted.

My toes are the only ones that get color - it's a must in FL. Yep, we wear sandals a LOT down here, so a good pedicure is a must, even when we do our own. My nails are at a perfect length right now, maybe 1/8", and not visible when I'm looking at the palm of my hand. That means they're the perfect length for typing. When I had few responsibilities, I'd let my nails grow and yeah, I was pretty high-maintenance about it. Oh, and if you ever hear a woman say "I broke a nail", have a little sympathy - it HURTS, especially if it's into the nail bed.

It drives me crazy if my fingernails get long. Always has. I think it's because I need my nails short to play the piano, and I've been playing since I was eight. I do like to paint my toenails, but I keep them short as well.

My nails never seem to grow too long even though I don't bite them.I also don't paint them very often.

My fingernails are between active and long. I get them reinforced because of the amount of stress I put on them. They are painted sheer and I love them because they make my hands look really great and make me feel girly girly.
