Due to budget cuts at work, my schedule has been cut by one day a week. I am trying really hard to step up my Pampered Chef business, which can make up for the lost income in time, but right now it's not happening. Any ideas on what I can do to make money on that one day off? Temp service? Student teaching? I'd make less than what I was making if it's minimum wage, but something is better than nothing ...

You could try registering with temp agencies but most employers want full time workers. I did work one day a month through a temp agency for a company that needed assistance sending out bills to their customers. You would likely do better as Harvie suggested and offering some type of service such as cleaning a home. I have seen ads on Craigslist for people who need help either on a one time basis or on a regular basis. You could post a flyer (ad) at a senior citizen center or at the library offering your services. What type of work do you do in your regular job? Peace, Anne

Some once-a-week newspapers / classifieds need to be delivered one day a week ... you might look into that. HAHAHAHAHA!!!! If you only KNEW what I did in my day/night/evening job! I don't post it much, but I am a newspaper reporter/editor. At a small daily newspaper which has 10 associated weeklies, that did not undergo budget cuts. And they come out on days I am working. I think it's going to be OK .... eventually. I just had a mini panic attack after seeing gas prices shoot up 20 cents overnight ... AGAIN!

Newspaper reporter/editor? Many companies need proofreaders & copywriters to work "freelance" for them. Iam an art director/graphic designer.....I don't actively "seek out" freelance work, but, once people find out what I do, and how well I do it, I regularly get calls from people to do freelance work......I end up having to turn down many of them, due to my regular job...and my need to have a "home life".....but, if my schedule permits, I accept (usually depends on the nature of the project, and who it's for), and it's a VERY profitable thing to do "on the side".. My motto: Do the type of work that you do best.

Hmmmm ... what sort of companies? I'm wondering if I could do this in Lower Akron or if I'd need to drive to Cleveland to get "freelance" work like that.

Could you do tutoring or teach a class at a vocational tech school? There might be some summer school students that need English skills or a summer class at a technical school.

Possibly. I've heard that student teachers don't need teaching certificates in some districts, but the school year is almost over.

Write a children's book. Write a book for college media students of how to survive in lean times. Write a book of humorous or interesting and motivating stories you've encountered... a bathroom reader of sorts. With the internet, publishing and marketing your own book(s) is much more easy and affordable. Many online publishers will do on demand printing, you no longer need to order 20,000 books before even getting a book store agree to carrying it.

Writing a book takes a lot of time, and unless you want to pay somebody (using funds I DO NOT HAVE) you'd better be ready to send it to publisher after publisher after publisher, accumulating a stack of rejection letters. I've tried freelancing simple articles, and found that I don't have the patience or stomach for it. Besides ... one thing I'd advise for college media students ... CHANGE YOUR MAJOR!

Do you mean substitute teachers? Yes, you could probably do that but would want to apply at lost of districts to get called every week.

Shop for and deliver groceries to local seniors and/or busy families and/or out-of-town non-drivers. If you built enough clients and charged, say $10 per client - 3 trips to the store, doing 4 clients per trip... $120 (less cost-of-gas).

Wait tables. That puts fast cash in your pocket, and some restaurants might like having a reliable person one day a week. In managing my own biz, I'd take 2 or 3 people who are extremely reliable part time, over one unreliable person full time.

What is your one extra day off? If you have Friday and Saturdays available, waitressing at a nicer restaurant might be a great idea. When I waitressed at Pizza Hut on weekends, I could easily bring in $100 in tips in a night, and that was Pizza Hut! Somewhere like Applebee's, Outback, etc. would make more, I'm sure.

That's really good Donna. When I worked at PH the customers seemed to have the attitude of "All they are bringing is a pizza or two, not a bunch of separate meals" and tipped lousy. About 5%. It wasn't a busy restaurant either. I barely made enough to bring up to minimum wage and I've always gotten good tips at other places I waitressed.

It was at a very busy PH in Rochester, so I'm sure that made a difference.
