Pray, Pray, Pray and when done pray some more. You said it is your boss who has to make the ultimate decision so it should not come back to you on friendship matter. I am assuming of course that this is a Christian church so as Christians they should value your friendship and not hold the decision against you. As a Christian you should realize that actually it is the LORD who chooses leaders and your friends should also realize this. You do need to let the Assistant director know of your friendship is how you know of these candidates and pray with him/her to receive guidance from the Lord as to who is better for position. I must be done with much prayer.
