I just saw a post in another thread that made me have to ask, lol ... Do you allow your kids to have a myspace? If you do are they actually old enough to have it or did you put it in your name or allow them to fib on their age?
Just about all of Tays friends have them and they are in the 11-14 age. A couple are younger though and they have them. One little girl on our street has had once since she was like 5. Her mom knew nothing about it, the neighbors did it.

No, they don't have one, and no, I would never lie for them.
Brandon does have a blog, though. Nate could care less at this point about either.

How old are they?
Tay has one, she is 10. The one she has we actually share. I have full access to it at any time. That is why it is ok with me that she has it.

Sorry I asked that question more than once.
I guess the fact that they are homeschooled makes it a lot easier to shelter them.

Shelter? I wouldn't say that. They aren't locked in the house all the time--both of them have friends and activities that they do. But they don't get caught up in a lot of the unnecessary stuff that makes the rounds among kids. Also I have been pretty firm on things all their lives.

What I mean is that you don't have to deal with a lot of the things that you have to deal with in school. The drama between the girls, the boyfriends and girlfriends. I just wish I could pull her away from it all.

It is nice not having to deal with much of that. But I think even if your child is in school, you can still put your foot down on things. For instance, even at 15, Brandon isn't allowed to date. There is no boyfriend-girlfriend stuff. There is a girl he likes to hang out with and I do have to set some parameters for that. It would be the same if he went to school. And even if they went to school, I would say no to myspace. I like how you have done it, though, sharing a myspace page. That was good thinking!

At least this way she has one and I control it. Not like some of her friends parents who have no idea. One of them left her page signed on at our house and I was just flipping through it and she was talking to a 27 year old man. I went to her mom but she told her mom I was wrong that he was someone who went to school with them.
Before I went to the mom I sent him a friend request from my personal myspace that isn't shared with Tay and he started talking to me, he wasn't a kid.
So I did all I knew to do.

Several of my 8th grade students have MySpace, but I don't know of any of my 7th graders who do... they told me they couldn't because they're too young, so I guess their parents aren't signing up for them and the kids aren't lying about their ages themselves.

Did you open it in her name or yours? If you opened it in hers, you have actually broken their Terms of Agreement, because the minimum age is 14.

That is one of the very reasons that I didn't allow my dd to have any of these various sites until she was 14. She needed to be mature enough to cope with all the drama. She still isn't allowed MSN or any other Instant Messenger, and she is actually happy that she isn't allowed, and understands that that rule is there for her protection.

I would not let my child lie about their age to get a myspace or facebook account.
My 17yo has both; I'm not sure when she got them. But she was 14 or older.
My now 13yo has asked, but I told her she wasn't old enough. End of subject. I don't know that her friends have them, but she may have asked since her sister does.
We'll discuss it again if she asks after she turns 14 in two months.

For the record, my dd is nearly 15 and has Bebo (minimum age 13) and Facebook (minimum age 14. Bebo is mostly for her friends from school, and Facebook is for young people and adults at church; it's especially useful for keeping in touch with friends away from University. I have full access to each (it was me that set them up, in her name, and me who set the passwords).
My ds set up his Facebook account when he was 18 and started University; he had shown no interest in any social networking sites before then.

So (just to clarify) when her friends want to look for her MySpace in order to request to be added to her friends list, they have to look for your name in the Search Engine? And all the notifications come to your email, not hers?

Yes, they have to know my name to find here. Most of them know me anyhow. They will send a friend request after they get it when they see I have my own they always want to be my friend too.

I wouldn't allow my child to lie, nor would I really be allowing them to have much internet time at age 10. That is the time for playing outside and hanging out with friends under parental supervision. Not putzing around the internet on myspace.

Grace has never had a turn on the computer yet and I don't plan on letting her until she is atleast 5 anyway, I have too many friends whose kids have DS and other things and are like 3 years of age! They just sit there playing their games and not wanting to draw, colour, read or play!

My 3 year old niece already has her own computer and her own internet login. She only goes to maybe 5 sites that her father specifically allows. I think it seems to be working out fine for her. She's learned a ton from the education games she plays (seriously, it's amazing what this girl has picked up), but she spends plenty of time playing, running around, coloring her drawings, etc. She's a very well rounded, healthy girl.
Could it get out of hand? Certainly. But I won't make any rock solid "No computer until this age" rule for my kids. But that's just me. I can completely understand why other parents would feel differently.
But in my niece's case, her mother does not like the outdoors at all, and once the new baby arrived she went outside even less. So they need stuff indoors for her to do. And she's to young to play outside without an adult very close by.

I just know what I see when I taught kids and ALOT of them knew how to use a mouse, but didn't know how to hold a pencil

That's cool then Ruth. I just know that if I let Grace start to use the computer she would want to use it ALL the time and it would be another thing to have to argue about with her. She comes and sits with me or daddy and looks at pictures and things like that, but I don't want her to be doing anything more just yet.

I get 'ya, Nicole. Every kid is different, and you gotta make the call based on your child.
Nathan loves the computer. What I mean is, he wants to play with it all the time, but we don't let him. All he'd do is bash the keys. But the few times he's climbed up on the seat, he handled the mouse pretty well. A lot easier then holding a pencil properly, I'm sure.
