So, we went to get his 4 year old checkup...and shots. He got four shots, and did well with them. He cried, but I had him pretty calm by the time we were in line to pay. As we gave the lady the money, I hear him begin to breathe heavily. I say, "Are you okay?" He looked up at me, and his face was WHITE, and his lips were BLUE. I pick him up immediately, and the lady behind the desk says, "Is he okay?" I said, "He's really pale and breathing hard." She said, "Take him back over there to the bench." I took him back, the nurse met me on the way. She got him laid down on the bench, and got the doctor. He checked his heart beat and said it was slow which is a good indication that he was about to pass out. So, they got him to lay there, wiped him down with cool wet washcloths, and gave him his lollipop. After a few minutes, he was fine...doctor came back and checked him again and said it was back to normal. They said that he will probably get worse with age...about passing out with shots and stuff. Others in the family do too, so it's not that uncommon, and although I was scared seeing him with blue lips, once I found out that he was just about to pass out, I understood more. They told me that this is something we need to inform people of now, and that after he gets shots in the future that he should lie down for a while afterward to make sure that he doesn't faint. Anyone else had a similar experience with such a young age?

Me!! I had my first fainting episode at 3 and still have them from time to time. My daughters BOTH have had the same problems and its' not only when they are getting shots. For us it usually happens when we are stressed or haven't eaten properly, or we get overheated. My youngest dd fainted on her way in from the playground one day! Thankfully the playground monitor knew I was in the building and the school nurse knew of her problem too. I was by her side within moments and she was already coming to. Blessings, Garsy

Hillary, how scary!!!!! I know a child who faints when he has an asthma attack. My kids have never had that happen, but I once hit the floor when my hubby was in the hospital and they were showing me how to clean his surgical wound. Long story short, I got out of that one and we got a home nurse. Sometimes being queasy has its benefits.

I was working in a DR. office (I am an RN) and I talked a 14 year old into getting a penicillin shot instead of 10 days of oral antibiotics... and she just leaned over the table, I gave her the shot and she stood up, and fell down. After I got her laid out nicely and a wet washcloth I surruptiously (sp) looked at her chart... I was afraid she was allergic to penicillin. (although you wouldn't react like that) THEN her mom laughs and says... "oh, she always faints when she gets a shot." OK THAT would have been good information to have BEFORE the shot!!! DS is a "breathholder", That will freak you out let me tell ya! Because it is usually when he hurts himself (not a temper thing) and he just can't get the air out or in and limp o city. Very disconcerting, but I have gotten used to it and he hasn't done it in a few years. so 11mo to 6 years or so?

Story time. I remember back in junior high we had to get out Hepatitis shots, and I watched one girl pass out BEFORE she got the shot. Collapsed right on the floor. The nurse who was trying to give her the shot was young and kinda freaked out a little. An older more experienced nurse walks over and goes "give her the shot before she wakes up" grabs the needle and stabs the girl laying on the floor. I got a good laugh out of that. I never passed out as a child, but as I got older, I got worse and worse with shots. I'm not afraid of the needle, but my body just rejects having metal piercing the skin. I've gotten better in the past year or so, because I did a medical study, and had to have IV's put in constantly. . . got use to it after a while.

Oh mine has NOTHING to do with the needles Trust me! I give my hubby insulin shots DAILY. I was trained to start IV's when I worked with the Developmentally disabled. I've held my own child down MANY times getting shots. Mine is truly NOT a needle thing! It's warm out here today and I KNOW that if I over do it or am not hydrating myself I could have problems. Enclosed small hot places? A really bad no no for me. I took a hot soothing bath a couple nights back - and had to have my hubby help me get up out of the tub because I started getting dizzy just sitting there. The bath was great - the getting up not so good! It's kinda scary at first, but soon you learn how to manage it and things you can do to help yourself. Blessings, Garsy

My 13 year old son almost fainted after a flu shot last fall. Once he got past that, he threw up! We tease him about it horribly because he'll start, six months ahead of time, asking about the shot. I think it's safe to say he'll never get a tattoo or piercing! LOL

That hadn't crossed my mind...but I guess that's at least one that I won't have to think about growing up and getting his body marked all over and holes in all the strangest places. :) I don't think he was embarrassed at all. I think he was just confused. He'll probably expect that is what happens to every child after every shot, at least for a while...

The first time I ever remember this happening to me, I'm guessing, I was 6. My grandfather got his thumb smashed in a piece of machinery at work (and subsequently had the tip of his thumb amputated). When we went to see him at the hospital, I got super woozy and lightheaded. I don't think I fainted but remember my mom and grandmother freaking out. I even did it when I got the cast off my ankle as a junior in high school. Not when I broke the ankle, but six weeks later when they took the cast off!!! Somehow I managed to get through two pregnancies alright. I thought that would cure me but, nope, I'm just as bad now as ever. I get it from my dad. Many many years ago I remember a friend of his coming to the house to get my mom (I couldn't have been more than 8) because he'd been out drinking with some fishing buddies...one guy was talking about some gory injury or surgery or something - just talking about it...my dad passed out cold, fell off the barstool, and had to be taken to the ER for stitches. How embarassing must that have been?!?!

When I was 13 or 14...I was like on a pill for anxiety or something like that. I was so young and I wasn't involved with anything. I was more like a guinea pig, haha. But anywho, I guess whatever medicine I was on was wayyy too high. I started passing out. I remember getting up from a laying position and I see a lot of shadows. I couldn't make anything out. And then the next thing I knew, I woke up when I was on the floor. My mom was by my side, like freaking out. I didn't know what happened and she said I passed out. And I've never, EVER had a seizure in my whole life. But that medicine was dangerously high that it gave me two seizures. Luckily, I'm off that medicine and I am back to normal. But it was so weird. Very, very weird.

I'm not quite sure...are you saying that him wanting a tattoo will likely be an issue one day? Often it does? I'm not so sure about often. It was never an issue with my husband...and I have a teenage nephew that has never mentioned getting one to anyone...and he says that he doesn't want one... Honestly, between my family and hubby's family...I know only two that have tattoos. All of them are relatives that do not associate with us... Off topic I guess...doesn't really have a lot to do with my child fainting...
