Hi guys, I have a list of songs for which I'm hoping you can help me obtain the copyright information:

You're Already Gonna Live Forever (Bishops)
I Believe (Gold City)
New Day Dawning (Whisnants)
Boundless Love (Cathedrals, others)
I Know The Plans I Have For You (LordSong)
My Answer Is Yes (BF&A)

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Music Services is great if the song you are looking for is held by one of the publishers they work with. however, if the song you need is with a different publisher then you are out of luck. You can visit the ASCAP, BMI, and SESAC websites and search for the songs you need. It depends on which group the songwriter belongs to. It will list which publisher conrolls the copyright.

But what if you're not sure who the songwriter is?

Example: A search at ASCAP for I Believe returned 905 songs with I believe in the title. They are list by songwriter so you really need to know who wrote the song. They also list who has performed the song. You're Already Gonna Live Forever returned 0 results which means whoever wrote it does not belong to ASCAP.

If you have a CD of the song The songwriter and the publisher should be listed on the case somewhere as all mechanical licenses I have ever gotten require that. If you have a track to the song the songwriter should be listed on its case. If you don't have these then you have to dig some. Perhaps an e-mail to the contact person on the website of the group who does the song.

I guess I'll have to shoot out some emails. I downloaded a lot of my music (legally!), so there's no information to be found. I'm needing to find songwriters for about half a dozen songs right now.

Thanks for the links guys! I had "I Believe" on a tape somewhere but I don't know where the cover is by now. And Adam's right - if you download the music (legally) there still is no information on songwriters.

I was hoping someone had a Gold City cd with "I Believe" on it laying around that could list the liners. Did Sue C. Smith write it? I have the info I need on "New Day Dawning" now, but none of the others.

From my personal experience with this:
If your wanting it for recording purposes and your wanting to use the exact track then you need to find out who owns the copy write to the particular song.
I had to do that on my album. I'm doing one of Lauren Talley's songs and had to go to Crossroads and get permission to use that because they owned the copy write to it. Also keep in mind that to lease a song/track for recording can be up to $400 per song.

I think I can at least help you with New Day Dawning.
Paragon Music Corp
c/o New Spring Publishing
741 Cool SPrings Blvd
Franklin, TN 37067
This is where we paid our royalties to the writer. Also we leased the track directly from the Whisnants for a 100.00 fee.

Mark Mathes wrote "I Believe". It was through BMI on Lonesome Bend Publishing.

Anybody own "Stories" by the Bishops with "You're Already Gonna Live Forever" on it?
How about the classic "His Love" by the Cathedrals and others? That one's not in P.D. is it?

I'm pretty sure that "Boundless Love" was written by Dianne Wilkinson (sp?).

Not to hi-jack your thread, youngartist, but I just have a little question for anyone who knows....

The song "I've Been Changed" by Vep Ellis ("I've been changed I'm new born now my life has been rearranged....") is it public domain?

No problem, Tina, anyone can feel free to ask song/copyright questions here.

I found out that Patti Hawkins wrote "I Know The Plans" but I don't have publishing info yet. Any additional info is welcome!

I found all the others this afternoon. Thanks.

Sorry, but no--it's too recent.

1923 is the big date--everything published in and before 1922 is in the public domain. So C. Austin Miles' "In the Garden" is PD (1919), but Give the World a Smile just missed (1927).

It used to be things would roll into the public domain on a yearly basis, but now with all the retroactive laws just passed in the last few years, I think it's life of author+75 for anything 1923-on (unless it was published 1923-1977 and was not renewed, which is the case for a very, very few works.)
