We live in a rural area. We have one adult mother dog and 5 three month old puppies. The puppies spend all but two hours a day in a large pen and the mother dog is never penned.

A dog we've never seen before showed up about two weeks ago. I suspected this dog was not a "drop off" or stray but was lost because it was well fed and had a collar. It is female and very friendly. The next morning, very early, a truck driven by an older woman pulled into our driveway and loaded up the dog. There was a young boy in the passenger seat. I, in my pjs, went to the door and the woman ID herself as a neighbor from about 1/3 mile down our road.

Whew, problem solved....

The dog was back the next morning

Later that day the young boy, riding his bike, came and got the dog

The dog was back the next day

Later that day the young boy, riding his bike, came and got the dog.

Dog was gone for four days

Dog came back again last Friday morning and NO ONE has come for it

It's been five days of trash all over the yard , barking half the night , chasing the cats , and distracting the puppies while we are walking them.

I yell at her and she lays down. I throw things at her and she lays down. I do not feed her and she gets thinner. BUT SHE STILL STAYS!

So here's my question- do I call the animal control guy? If I take it back home then it will most likely come back. Obviously her owners have given up on her. I hate to upset the neighbors but they are not coming for their dog even though they know where it is. Ugh...

Forgot to mention the "last straw". My children have spent several days cleaning the pool liner, I am so proud of all the work they've done. Yesterday two children came in crying that the dog was tearing the pool liner. There is a huge whole in the pool- not repairable.

Tell them to come get their dog this time and let them know that if it happens again and she is there for more than X number of days, you'll call animal control.

My suggestion, anyway.

Why? They have no problem upsetting you.

It is right to treat others with love and respect but you should also "demand" that they treat you with respect. Don't let people walk on you! Call them or go see them in person. If they don't solve the problem then call animal control.

Call on them, present them with a bill for the pool liner, and say to her that for the safety of your property, and the safety of the dog, you will be calling animal control the next time it's on your proerty.

This is exactly what I was going to post. But now I don't have to.

Seriously, we had the same problem with my neighbor feeding stray cats that were using our side yard as a litter box. We told her she had two weeks to a) take them inside and make them her own pets or b) stop feeding them so that they would go away. (She kept food and water on her front porch all the time.) We told her at the end of two weeks we were going to trap any cats that were left and take them to animal control. This is what animal control told us to do--we called and asked what to do. At the end of two weeks, she was still keeping food and water on the porch, so my husband went and got traps. He trapped one stray and took it away. Then for a couple of days we kept finding the traps closed with no cats, but lo and behold, the food was removed from her porch and the cats started disappearing without us doing anything.

It might actually be better for that dog to be removed if the family doesn't care about it.

That, too. I would definitely ask them to pay for the damage their dog did on your property.

That poor dog would rather suffer loss of food and being yelled at by you than to be with her own family! Makes you wonder how bad they are!

They should surely pay for the pool liner and the dog should be spirited off to a no-kill shelter and adopted to people who will love her.

We too have had dogs prefer us to their owners. It's sad. Dogs are very loyal, so, it must be bad there.

Thanks so much for all your responses!

This is exactly what has been bothering me! What are these people doing?

If I had gotten more sleep last night I might feel sorry for the dog, but my thinking is that she acts the same way at home so the owners are glad to be rid of her. It would take no more than a few weeks to have her acting better but we can not afford another dog!!

The one I really feel sorry for is that little boy. At least he cared enough to travel a dangerous road on his bike and come get her twice. If it weren't for him I'd have called animal control days ago.

My children will be with their Gran on Friday so I'll load up the dog in our carrier and take her home on that day. I'll let them know about the damage and tell them we will be forced to call animal control if she comes back.

Pray for me! I'm a big chicken when it come to confronting people!

I wonder if it's to do with the puppies? My mother had a dog that just loved critter babies (to the extent she would steal the cats kitties ) and maybe this dog is just the same?

It is wrong though, and you should be given the money to repair the lining for the pool. And they need to figure out how to control her.

Why? Is it because you care too much about what other people think?

Personally I think you need to do the right thing by your children, as much as for anyone.

Look at what you said here:

quote:

Your children need to see you standing up for what is right, standing up for them and standing up for yourself. In seeing you being assertive, or at least knowing that you are being assertive about this, it will help them learn to be assertive, instead of being "victims".

Our neighbor's cat has been 'lurking' in our yard (we just moved to a new home). He upsets the dog, is killing birds (including babies), spraying in your yard, and I'm afraid he's going to poop in the kids' sandbox (we have a lid, just have to remind them to put it on). The neighbor lives behind us and I've only seen her like once or twice since moving here about a month and a half ago. She adopts and fosters animals - it's a regular zoo over there. She has three dogs and six or seven cats (most of the cats stay inside, except 2). I think it's great that she wants to help animals, but should the cat be running loose?

Is there a no-kill shelter around? I would just take her there. The family obviously doesn't want her or can't take care of her. Five days is just ridiculous since they would at least have an idea of where she might be.

If they come by and ask about her, just tell them give them the info for the shelter.

You're absolutely right, but that deserves a post of it's own!

quote:

Not sure about this but I think if it's spraying your yard then it's still an intact male and needs to be fixed?

quote:

so i keep an old broom on the porch and when it wont leave i just shake the broom, i dont hit it or anything like that , it just runs away when i shake it.

If only this would work. Never before have I seen a stray dog that won't even budge when it's chased or at the sound of a loud noise... it just lays down What do you do when they just give up?

This morning I was awake from 2:30 till 5 trying to get the dog to either stop barking or get lost, no luck. Found out when the children were feeding the puppies that during the night she climbed the back steps and got into the dog food storage.

So instead of waiting another night and dealing with this tomorrow, when I have more time locate where exactly the dog lives, I called animal control.
I feel bad for the people but if they care to stop and check I'll let them know where and why she was taken.

Make sure you keep the dog there if you call animal control because sometimes they won't do anything unless they SEE the dog in your yard.

i dont blame u for calling the animal control. the broom works sometimes, but other times i see myself running out in the yard in my house coat looking silly chasing a dog. lol. but i think u did the right thing and it sounds like it was the only thing u could do. and if they want the dog back then they will know that it needs a place so it will not run away and annoy the neighbors.

Obviously, God has sent you this dog and it loves you.

Just give in to His will and take the poor thing in and train it.

Yikes! LOL!

ConsiderHim - care to give an update? Did they come and get the dog? Did the family ever come looking for it?
