Has anyone ever dealt with Perilla Mint (also called Beefsteak?) It's really thick in parts of our pasture this year. We're getting ready to spray it, I was just wondering if anyone else has dealt with it successfully and can offer suggestions. We know it's toxic to livestock. The animals all steer very clear of it.

Just to animals, apparently there are a lot of human uses for it, though! It seems like a beneficial herb for people. But it'll kill animals.

We have alot of trouble with it. Yes, cows will steer clear of it but watch the goats...our goats ate it and we lost several to it. We havent found a way to get rid of it, but dad would just take the weedeater and knock it down, that seemed to solve most of the issue. Luckily they only seemed to bother it when other grass got to be "slim pickings".

EEk! Our goats haven't bothered it so far, but we're moving them to a different part of the land this weekend anyway. Then we'll annihilate the weed with some Round Up, LOL. So weed-eat it, huh? We'll see if we can kill it and if it starts springing back up we'll knock it down again.

Careful with the pesticides/herbicides. They're estrogenic, so be sure whoever sprays wears a mask!!!!! Try the weedeater first.

Yeah, once its dead its not a problem, so we just knock it down and turn them back in after it wilts. We've had a cow eat it once, maybe twice, but the goats have eaten it badly. We lost several until we figured it out. But since goats prefer weeds over grass thats probably why.

I'm REALLY curious why it's poisonous to animals but not people. I wonder what's different about our systems. That's really interesting.
And that being so, I wonder if you planted it (in raised beds to contain it) around the perimeter of a garden, it would keep the beasties out. Hmmm. I have a friend who would really benefit from that if it would.

If it seeds and spreads it will completely take over. I'd probably not recommend that. You should see the pasture. Parts of it look like an ocean of this stuff.

I wonder if it has to do with with how animals chew their cud and stuff (do goats have more than one stomach? I cant remember) because I know it sometimes makes them bloat and stuff. Maybe that has something to do with it.
Yeah I'd be afraid to actually plant it, it will definitely take over....but maybe weedeating (or brush hogging it-depending on the area size)it before it seeds will help control that?
