Anyone ever have them? We have some planted this year and was wondering if anyone else ever grew them or if they are any different in taste after cooking.
My husband was a little reluctant at first, but it says they turn green when cooking. I think they are kinda cool - its easier to pick as purple stands out from green leaves. Right now we have lovely purple flowers and it looks like a lot of future beans :)

I've grown them before, I think it was last summer. They were purple and then turned bright green when cooking. They were just as good as regular green beans.
Are they bush beans? That's what I had.

My mom grows these.I find them really cool looking since purple is my fave color.

These have been my choice for a few years now. I think they have better flavor than the green ones. I also like that they're easier to pick. And, yes they do turn green when you cook them. An added bonus is if you want to freeze them, they turn green when they are blanched long enough, you don't have to time them.
Just a hint also - when I freeze small things like green beans I do it on cookie sheets then put in a bag or container after they're frozen. That way they freeze faster and it's also easier to pour out as much as I need.

I grew some last year. Some are dwarf varieties, some are climbing and grow tall. I read that they were easier to find on the plant than the ordinary green varieties ~ but the stems were pretty hard to see. I'm growing a yellow variety this year and borlotti beans (they have a cream and red pod).
Last year the slugs and snails got most of my plants though ~ I only had one left in the end.

How did your beans turn out?
I remembered also that if you snip the bean off the plant with a tiny bit left on the stem it will grow a new bean on the same stem. I did have this work for me after I had heard it elsewhere. My beans aren't quite far enough along to try it again this year.

The beans are great! :) Easy to find, nice flavor. I think we'll get more next year. Funny thing was that DH wanted to know where the purple color goes when they are cooked - the water is NOT purple.
I had forgotten I started this thread till a recent response :)

You should try the yellow ones too ~ they stay yellow (although they start off green and ripen to yellow) when cooked ~ and are great in salads.

I don't know if I have the same kind, but I planted a mix of heirloom beans that are either gold, green or purple, and I have the most horrible aphid problem. They're everywhere, and I don't know how to get rid of them without using pesticides.
I'm looking forward to cooking these beans, though.

You can use your hose and a strong blast of water. Make it strong enough to blast the aphids but not enough to hurt the plants.
My Dad grows these purple pole beans. He calls them Italian beans. Whether that is true or not I don't know. When we cook them we make them Italian style with olive oil and a bit of garlic. Tomato added in is good too.

I have been steaming my beans for the freezer. I also capture the juice that drips and freeze it for soups. When I put the juice into the freezer it was green. When I took it out, it was purple!
