My son just bought a started pack of Redemption Trading Cards... it came with a rule book.

When I was a kid, the only trading cards I ever bought were sports cards and Garbage Patch kids . We didn't play games with them! We traded them to get the best and the rarest that we could or to put together an entire set or team.

Anyway, this is just weird, and feels off. I don't know why it feels off so I was hoping that someone here could enlighten me as to the nature of these type games so I can know what we are or may be getting into.

Thanks.

It's kind of a Christian version of games like "Magic". My strict, conservative Christian parents allowed my brothers to play it... But I have no real knowledge of the game since I don't like that sort of thing.

OK. So I'm curious about this. What does the list of good characters consist of and what ones are evil?

Wow! My ds has gotten into Pokemon cards - despite my best efforts. I've been fighting a losing battle with his little friends giving cards to him and then my aunt went and bought him a huge pack of them.

He told me that one of his friends had trading cards that were from the Bible but I couldn't find them or figure out what he was talking about. I'm so going to get a bunch of these and try to dump the Pokemon!!!

Let's stick to the topic which is NOT pokemon but Redemption cards. If you want to discuss the pros and cons of pokemon, then start a new thread. Thank you.

Bad Characters include Diotrphese, the rich young ruler, Philetus.

Good characters include Michael the Archangel, Servant girl, Seth, Angel of Revelation.

Those were the first that I came to.

They each have a verse with them. I gave David 10 cards. Each time he memorizes a verse from one of his cards, he earns another card. I write down the references so I can keep track. He is responsible to be able to say them to me at any given time once he has it memorized. It is working out nicely.

When we lived in DC, these were really big with the teens in our hs group! They met to play/trade. My kids were still sort of young then, so they never really got into them. I'll have to check them out again!

This game makes me feel very cautious. It seems to blur the lines between fact (there actually is an archangel Michael, whos actual actions are revealed in Scripture) and fiction (we play that archangel Michael can do this or that, is in this or that heavenly brigade... whatever).

If I'm going to teach my children about the heavenly host, I'm going to stick to what is known, what is revealed, what is true. I'd be afraid of fostering confusion by then introducing extra information with plenty of detail. What if the made-up details are inaccurate? Wouldn't that put our children at risk for misunderstanding the heavenly host and spiritual warfare in general? And if they misunderstand spiritual warfare... and then they actually have to engage in spiritual warfare... I just think that might have bigger consequences than playing games that are clearly fictional.

This is something that I am keeping a close eye on. It hasn't gotten my full approval yet, and David knows that we are just testing the waters right now. We are watching VERY carefully.

A good thing to watch for, I agree. This could be a great tool to talk about the reality of spiritual warfare and how it is different than the game (and most definitely NOT a game! ). The game could be a great jumping off point for some really good discussion, IMO.

Anything that smacks of anime, in my book, is not innocent. Just personally, as a mother and as THE mother responsible for one particular little future man of God, I'm just not playing around with anything that teaches of powers other than those of the Holy Spirit. It may all seem harmless, and very well may be for most kids, but as a society we are so desensitized to "spiritual" things. We're creating entire generations of children who don't have a clue what's real and what's from Harry Potter. Don't even get me started on Harry Potter! It's just one of those things where I've drawn the line.

I see the caution about these cards making too much of a game of it and mixing fact with fantasy. That's a tough one because, to be frank, I think a lot of churches mix fact with fantasy!! It's a minefield our poor kids have to walk through every day. And a big, big job we have.
